Cleaning and preparing replacement calipers

Featured Replies

I've just bought some 312mm calipers and carriers to fit to SWMBO's fabia vRS. They are used and a little grubby but I have some time before they get fitted.

They have been painted prior to my ownership but the paint is starting to flake. What is the best was to tackle this? Sandpaper or take them to a specialist to get the paint off?

I would like to keep them green but can't find any smooth green hamerite in my local halfords (have yet to try the DIY stores). So far they've had a good clean with a sponge/AG Clean Wheels and some water and I'm supprised just how clean they've become.

I would of thought sanding them back yourself as far as you can, and then a few good layers of paint would be fine.

Get them blasted I guess if you want the new paint to really really stick well.

Get them as clean as you can with sand paper and wire brushes. Then give them a coat of Hammerite High Temperature Matt Black paint. (It's like water and acts as a very good sealer and undercoat.) Then give them a coat with proper epoxy based caliper paint. You then need to apply a sealer lacquer to keep the brake dust out of the paint.

I sanded mine down and brushed hammerite smooth green on, then sprayed laquer over the top however it has started to flake now in small areas (9 months on) so I would suggest priming them or something first

OK, I might have a go at sanding them down, If that doesn't work where would I go to get them blasted? is that something a bodyshop would do?

To get them blasted they would need to be stripped right down, pistons removed and all the seals replaced.

I good wire brushing and cleaning with brake cleaner should be enough,

When I was doing mine I saw a few companie on the intrenet that reconditioned calipers removing all pistons and replacing seals etc. I used a foliatech kit which I bought from Awesome but I think you can buy it in Halfrauds - dont think the green they do is a good match though, you do get all the stuff in the kit though, brake cleaner, paint and hardener

That all sounds like alot of cost just to make them green again.

I think that a good clean will will do then. Shall take my time and keep having a go at them

Think it time I spoke to Sarah.

Nitromors? Should eat the paint away, just make sure not to get it on your skin or the seals (Mask areas up)
