Grating noise when turning right..

Featured Replies

Hi chaps, got a bit of an issue that has cropped up recently.

I know your not supposed to do it, but its easier to notice it, but if i coast around a left hand bend (with the window open, no radio on) i can hear a 'grating' noise coming from the offside front wheel. You can just hear it if the clutch is up, but obviously there is less engine noise when coasting so it is more noticeable.

When i say grating noise, imagine your wrought iron gate on your garden, rusty hinges and you open it slowly. It sort of makes a grating/grinding noise, well it sounds similar to that.

Obviously my first suspicion (sp? I can't type to save a jelly baby tonight) was the wheel bearing, i have a lot of experience with the use of bearings so i know what a knackered one sounds/feels like, and this sounds similar. But after reading a different thread, someone paid £170 at an independant garage for the bearings doing (i seriously hope that isn't just 1 hub doing). So obviously i am hoping it isn't the bearings.

If anyone could shed any light on this, it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Matt:)

easy enough to check if its the bearing jack it up give a whirl if it makes a noise its that.

Other possibilites could be the top mounts knackered, or your cv boot could have split and grease has come out.

could also be something as simple as a stone between the pad and disc/ in the tyre

Is this a short noise or prolonged?

I've noticed an occasional very short grate noise turning straight after setting off... I was putting it down to the brake pads catching on the lips of the disk but maybe its something else :(

It will be the brakes. Check disc splash plate isn't too close to the disc rotor. Also wire brush the rusted lip of the disc rotor. Would be worth blasting the caliper and pads with brake cleaner as well.

Thanks for the help guys. It is sort of prolongued, it does it for the whole period that i am turning left, so from the moment i turn the wheel to the left and the right hand side of the car loads up....it then stops as soon as i straighten my wheel and the suspension is then evenly weighted.

I just noticed that i have said 'right hand bend' in my original post, i meant left hand bend, sorry :o

I would say a worn bearing gives more of a droaning sound + vibration rather than grating. - It would be worth going out in the car and double checking what type of noise you're experiencing as this may help determine the cause.

However here are my thoughts:

1. If you suspect it's the brakes: I would take the wheel off and visually inspect the pads, discs and disc guard and check their condition and that nothing is catching (have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock for you, then spin the disc round a couple of times).

If there's salt or grit between the pads and disc, find a quiet stretch of road (making sure no-one is behind you) and brake sharply a couple of times. This would get rid of it.

2. CV joint - if it's the CV joint you'll hear a clicking / knocking sound when turning on a lock (either left or right depending on which side). You'll also have a slight movement / vibration fed back through the steering wheel. This is when the car is moving not stationary.

You could also check the whether the CV boot / gaiter has split or come off the back of the CV joint and is losing grease.

3. Wheel bearing - if it's the wheel bearing you'll hear a droaning noise when turning on a lock. You can't always tell if a bearing has gone by jacking up the car and manually turning the wheel and or checking for movement top to bottom. If it is the bearing it will obviously get worse / louder over time.

You did say that it continued to make a noise when coasting round a bend (left) - does it still make a noise when you brake, if so I would say it's bearing related.

The £170 I paid was for one side only - about £75 for the bearing and ABS sensor, then labour on top of that.

The above are only options i would look at first...

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply, a droaning noise probably describes it better. Grating was the best word i could think of at the time :o

I can't hear it when going foward (accelerating/cruising/breaking), or when going right a right hand bend.

It seems it is only doing it when the front offside suspension is loaded up. The brakes squeel like a piggy when they warm up, maybe this could be related somehow.

I will get the old man to give me a hand at the weekend and check things out that people have mentioned.

Will let you know how i get on.

Thanks

Matt

What was the diagnosis?

Doubt you'll get a reply as this thread is from 2009 and that's the last time the OP was active too.

For anyone else getting this noise, it could very well be just a stone caught and rubbing against brake disc. I have had this a few times and the first time it happened I was very worried because it sounds really bad. It should work itself out eventually.......

Im getting the same noise but when I’m turning righ had it put into the garage and they couldn’t find where it was coming from but  sounded like it was coming from back left checked the break disc shield and is rotten to shreds but could that be the issue ? Itl only happens when turning right and not left ?
