wheel bearing or tyre?

Featured Replies

Whilst coming back from London ,all of a sudden i could hear a drumming noise which was relative to road speed. It starts at about 25 mph and goes on right through all speeds. I thought it was the rear tyres , so i replaced them , but still the noise is there. Then i swapped the rears for the fronts ,and still the same. I have noticed that if i go round a right hander at speed , the noise stops, so would that point to the drivers side wheel bearing ? and if so how can i tell whether its front or back?.I have jacked up all corners and felt for any play ,or roughness ,but front and back seem ok. I have even jacked up the front and run the car at upto 60mph and there is no noise.Any help appreciated as im totally flummoxed as to where its coming from :confused:

When I had a bearing fail on the front I had similar.

Drive straight and it rumbled, steer left and it rumbled, steer right and it stopped. It was kind of hard to pinpoint where it was coming from when driving as it resonated through the chassis but it was clearly coming from the front.

Booked it in for offside bearing but it turned out that it was nearside. Apparantly the noise disappeared when going right as the load was then placed on the nearside stabilising the wheel. straight on or left and it was under less load and therefore vibrated more.

What Ian said, they make a kind of drone but not a drumming noise.

Funnily enough i had to replace one of mine today..... certainly not for the faint hearted lol. I'm glad i have oxy acetylene.

I got a friend to sit in the back , and he said the noise seemed to be coming from the offside rear .I have looked at the tyres , and one of the fronts seems to have sawtoothed a little , but that would be a gradual thing wouldnt it ? If i order one from gsf, are the rear ones all the same ,as mine has rear drums, and gsf have some on e bay at the moment. regards Dave

I think the rears contain the hub assembly, they do on rear disc braked cars.

I had to change a wheel bearing recently. The fact that the noise changes as you change direction indicates its a front wheel bearing. Also, jack the car up, hold the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock the wheel. If there is movement - wheel bearing failure. You can spin the wheel. If it is not smooth - wheel bearing issues
