Windy wing mirror!

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Anyone experienced this version of the Octavia II windnoise issue? Since getting the car in November I've always been aware of a "whistling" noise that is apparant at speeds of between 30-60mph coming from the drivers side window. Now i had always put this down to the standard Octavia wind noise issue of dodgily fitted windows or doors. Indeed the dealership has already changed the door seals on the car to no avail. They are now in the process of finding the correct sealent to use on the doors in an attempt to address this problem.

However now the weather has improved a bit I have started driving with the window open. I noticed the other day that noise is still there but when the window is open the whistling is amplified. It seems (to my ears anyway) to be coming from the drivers mirror! After examining the mirror i cannot see any difference between it and its passenger side partner. There is no damage to it and i can see no gaps in its seal.

Has anyone come across this before or do I have a naturally noisy mirror? This issue only seems to manifest itself in dry conditions so maybe water forms a seal somewhere?

Any advice would be great as its driving me batty!

Sounds like a bodge but try taping up the joints in the mirror casing to see whether it really is the mirror or something else, if it proves to be the mirror you can always pack out the gaps with a suitable substance like foam strips etc.

My mirrors whistle under certain conditions but I live with it TBH.

You could try folding the mirror in and see if the noise changes of goes away. Just remember to fold it back out again ;-)

It can also be the plate that is attached to the door. If it stands off, it will produce windnoise.

Mine has a wind noise around the mirror too not much just a bit when you hit 60mph+. I think you'll find that is one of 'features' of the Octavia "Slight wind noise at speed around mirror" in one of the reviews i looked at before I got my car. The Golf MK5 did make the same sound too.

Interesting to see if one of the face-lifted Oct's with new mirrors is quite or not.

james.

I get a wind noise over my right shoulder so I think the window seals need looking at but I've not got round to taking it back yet.

Yours is the fixed quarterlight on the back door, a different story.

Thanks for all the replies. I will try taping up all the gaps on my next day off from work.

The thing I find very annoying is when you look through the rear view mirror, the view you get is normal but when you look through the door mirrors things look very distant, this is the first car I've had that gives that optical impression

Door mirrors and rear view mirrors usually show a different depth of view. This is to allow for a better, wider viewing angle via the door mirrors - vital for motorways and the like. I can't remember driving a car where this wasn't the case.

Check out what i mean when you driving, first look in the door mirror if a car is following then check the interior one and see how close it actually is.

I think having 2 different types could lead to an accident as the door ones make you think things are further away than they actually are

There is a warning on american cars that states exactly that :D

One can only assume that is down to the compensation culture in the USofA

If the objects appeared any larger in the door mirror the field of view would be narrowed down increasing the blind spot. The convex tip widens the field of view further still.
