Can fettling with the suspension damage...

Featured Replies

...the wishbones? I spoke to someone a couple of weeks ago with a Fab RS and they suggested that they were going to fettle with the suspension on theirs, but they were put off by losing the warranty and that there had been reports of damaged wishbones resulting from the mod.

Anyone care to enlighten me if this is likely from changing the springs to Eibachs?

Paul

not heard of this myself, I know Ross has been running his on eibachs for quiet some time. Just make sure you get the right springs for the vRS, not the TDI ones and you should be fine.

I don't think you can damage the wishbone but the bushes, in the wishbone joints, will probably wear quicker.

Are these expensive parts?

Paul - I need a new set of something down there due to the tougher suspension. Apparently my car comes with some sort of "joint" made of plastic and I've nearly totally fooked up mine! (I get nice clonky noises sometimes! :() But thankfully Skoda have developed a "mod" with metal instead of plastic and it'll cost me about

OK thanks for the replies.

I am a bit tempted now to go for the vRS springs and a remap when I can afford it!

I'm not sure it is the bushes themselves - they said it was some steering component - I'll have to get them to clarify.

Oh, it would be nice if someone could link to a proflex/powerflex supplier - Would good old Demon Tweeks do them? :D

Yep, they do Powerflex :D

Proflex, IIRC, make inordinatley expensive coilover suspension.

This any use to you :D

Merci beaucoup!

Left me wondering if the VW ones will also fit the Fabias though! :(

OK, another question.

Which would be the most cost effective and overall best way to firm things up:-

1. Eibach vRS springs on standard dampers or

2. Standard springs, but uprated dampers

I dont find grip lacking particularly but obviously I'll welcome any improvement, but mainly I want to make things firmer, more planted and better feeling. Whats the best way to do this?

Please forgive all my questions, they may seem stupid to you but I am a total newbie when it comes to modding cars and still I am no clearer in my mind what to do for the best.

In general I think most peeps who've done this have gone #1.

Or to throw a "curve ball " at ya.....how about the Eibach springs for the TDi which are a little softer than the VRS ones? ;)

True, but the TDI springs are not recommended for the vRS.

True, but the TDI springs are not recommended for the vRS.

What was the reason? I think the TDi ones are still stiffer than the standard VRS ones and I can't believe the TDi is that much lighter than the VRS.

I guess the VRS ones are more expensive?

The TDI springs apparently are not rated for something like 900 kg at the front, and the vRS springs rated for 960 kg. Also the vRS springs are stiffer. Also, the TDI springs lower it by 30 mm and the vRS by 25 mm. Any more than a 25 mm drop is apparently not recommended if you want to avoid damaging the sump.

When it says rating does this mean the weight or the car or the actually weight needed to compress the springs?

Also, and I might be being dim here, the TDi springs lower by 30mm....but isn't this for the TDi? (I'm wondering now whether is doesn't which car they are for bit the amount it lowers is just dependent on the platform for which it is lowered....if you know what I mean).

The vRS is supposed to be (allegedly) 15mm lower than a standard Fabia, hence why the vRS springs do not lower it as much. I guess the rated weight is for the weight of the car, but I honestly dont know.

The TDi springs are too bouncy on the Fabia vRS because of the front axle weight difference. (60kgs) or so i found, much better ont he correct springs.

My front wishnones are just fine after 15k on the suspension, and dont forget m also running Brembo's so the loading on them is greater.

I had to replace a wishbone the other day on a car that had been kerbed, new wishbone complete with bushes was

Ta Ross, I think I may well make the Eibachs my first upgrade :)

I might ring my local powerflex dealer and ask them if ya want? They're down in Tavistock somewhere.

I think the mod Jason is refering to is the anti roll bar rework. Where the plastic collar breaks and the anti roll bar slides sideways and hits on the subframe.

Dont worry about the vRS the Anti roll bars, they are all metal iirc.
