Goodbye...

Well, I'm afraid to say it, but as a couple of you know already and it'll be pretty obvious soon enough; I'm getting rid of my Superb.

It's not something I want to do, it suits my needs right down the ground - it's quick enough, comfy enough, big enough, looks good enough, it ticks all the boxes - except it's more expensive to run than I can justify. As you can see I live in Rugby, and most of you know I work for Halfords at their head office in Redditch; which is a 42 mile each way commute. As a result my fuel expenses alone are somewhat, er, large...

So I'm trading it in for an Audi A2 TDI at the weekend. Pics will of course follow. I don't want to get rid of her, she's been great; but with a 50% reduction on my insruance and £35/yr tax, let alone the up to 78mpg economy, I can hardly say no...

I'm staying on the forum anyway, it's not like I'm the only Briskodian without a Skoda, and you're all a nice bunch of folk here (so I'm told :D) but clearly I'll not have a Superb any more.

So, there you have it :)

Hope all goes well for you with the swap over Bluefox.

So that's what you're getting :D

Sounds like a wise move and a good choice of car I reckon - have always like the A2 and it's something a little bit different; hardly ever see any up here.

What colour is it? And get some photos up and a Member's Car thread started when she arrives

Steve

Hmm... we own an A2 TDi as the second car runaround for 'er indoors.

Putting it diplomatically, I wouldnt buy another.

What can I warn you about?

All the wheelbearings will fail like clockwork at around the 65-70k mileage mark

Watch out for the door hinges - check them with a magnifying glass before you hand over the cash. They tend to tear off if they've been abused because the stiffer aluminium of the bodys frame - if you can see hairline cracks forming around the hinges walk away now because it's horrifically expensive to get them repaired.

If it's got the larger 17 wheels on it, be prepared to get bent over every time you get tyres for it - they used to be the ONLY application for this size of tyre, I think there's now one other car that uses this tyre size. You've got a choice of Continental or Pirelli I seem to remember, both are 130 quid plus from online retailers - and a lot more at places like kwik-****.

Ours has been remapped to well over 100bhp, it goes like the proverbial off a shovel now.

They rattle like mad because they're only 3 cylenders!

Watch out for corrosion - we had some fixed by an audi approved bodyshop as part of the buying deal - if you've got bubbling paint it needs special treatment and special paint to sort it out or it'll just keep coming back.

They're a pig to service - the air filter has to be withdrawn from under the vehicle, drivers side right infront of the wheel... and it's a long airfilter so you need a lot of clearance. You're also *extremely* limited to choice of jacking points because the body's core is made of aluminium - think carefully before you jack it up.

Finally, the stated MPG and the real world mpg are totally different if you're leadfooted... if you drive it over 75-80 on the motorway it's only just more efficient than my V6 TDi (It's geared incredibly short, and can only just make a tonne) - so be careful. If you stick to 70 on the motorway it wins hands down, impressively, but around town I cant really see much difference. I suppose though that's because you end up driving everywhere with your foot planted to the floor because they're not particularly quick off the line!

If you're careful with it, the rewards are massive - and it's amusing filling it up, £32 is about the max that I can get in the tank :) I do quite enjoy driving it on short hops because it's really nippy, but on long trips it's a bit of a nightmare, typical hard Audi seats that you sit 'on' rather than 'in' - and rock hard suspension because of the cars COG - I've never been able to get comfy in the damn thing on 2h+ trips :/

I drove the APS A2, which was also mapped, it was pretty nippy (considering size/weight/engine) and fuel economy was ace

Aww man sorry to hear that.

Kinda shocked, not to mention a little hurt that you never spoke to me about this first though! I have to find out along with everyone else? You had plenty of opportunity to bring this up last weekend, instead you just rolled over and went to sleep.

Hmmm seriously though, good look with the Audi, hope you like it. I do see the reasoning with finances. I know what it's like to get rid of a car you really want to keep but can't justify the costs any longer. In fact it's why I opted for a Superb.

Yeah stick around anyhow man, you'd be missed, else who will comment on my terrible puns from now on buddy?

bad news, good luck with the swap tho  , shame you never got it on the rollers last time at Awesome, would have been nice to have 2 superbs @ a RR day. :(

Going to be a big shock going from a Superb then

Polo/Fabia with the same engine is better in every way, particularly for ease of servicing and maintenance costs. That's why this design got the chop.

rotodiesel.

All the best Foxy, and I hope the new arrival is a satisfying one you you, I can see your logic on it all day long.

Just to answer some points in Bluefox's abscene..........

It is Black mate...........

I am sure that Bluefox will look into all these points and I am sure he may put some questions your way but it's good to know that someone has some experience with these little motor's as I know little about them..............:(

The A2 has the 16" alloys on for reference...........

All the best with the Audi - I do like those myself.

Thanks for all your input to posts in the past for all of us, and glad to hear that you will still be around.

It's nice to see that Bluefox is going to stay around! :D

Thanks for all the kind words and support folks, I appreciate it.

That's exactly the reason I'm sticking around!

I'll post up a new thread when I've got her here, after putting the final update on my Superb's PD.

Thanks for the input on the A2 as well, everyone who provided it... looks like it's got just as many problems as any other car, but I'll sure as hell not miss that bloody pollen filter housing!!

:)

:/

Exactly the same as the Fabia ones.

Never been a massive fan of the A2, went on the launch course for them and coming from a technicians point of view we felt it was a massive step backwards. They rattle inside and are a pig to work on sometimes, gearboxes gave issue but to be fair my experiance of them is quite dated now and they were very early models.
