Whirring drone :O

Featured Replies

For the past couple of day's I've had a new sound to add to the collection which has reared it's ugly head, and it's very annoying.

I don't have a lot of time so I shall make it short :P

You can't hear it at idle

You can't hear it until you get to ~20 mph

It doesn't matter weather you're in gear or not at these speeds you can hear it in either instances

Changing hears does not affect the sound

The pitch changes, it seems to get deeper the slower I go (towards 20mph)

If I remember any more I shall update.

But for now, does anyone have any ideas?

Somthing rubbing against somthing, or a bearing on its way out?

I would jack it up (and secure it properly) then put it in 4th or 5th gear and just let the clutch out. Then have a walk round and see if you can pin point where the noise is coming from. This is not the recommended way of doing it, but its alot cheaper than hiring a rolling road for an hour. Be very carefull not to go anywhere near the wheels when they are spinning, (obviously)

Wheel bearing

I had a similar noise in mine.

I kicked her out and it was all fine.

:rofl::rofl:

Probably wheel bearing, or top of the strut - that has a bearing in it too.

Cool, I'll get it checked out :D

Thanks for the help people!

1 more question... how long do you reckon I have before it's no longer functioning?

I'd rather not drive around on it much if it's something that could go quickly or at any random time :P

Thanks again!

In my case it was a wheel bearing and I drove it for another 1000 miles but that was only because I had 'no choice' other than not being able to work at the time.

The reality is that you could be fine for ages or it could cease worst case. I would hope it is unlikely to cease soon, but you probably want to avoid testing how fast the car can go ;)

Just try to get it checked as soon as you can

Yeah sounds like a wheels bearing to me. DIY it and jack it up and shake the wheel by grabbing the top and bottom of the tyre. You'll know the feeling on the one that's knackered. Try get it in the workshop asap as it could go at any time, better to be safe than sorry, belting along the dualler and your wheels bearing goes...!

 The scene from Ferris Buellers Day Off just popped into my head, where camerons dad's prized Ferrari 250gt goes smashing through the window when they had it propped up trying to reverse the mileage...........

I've been suffering with the same problem with the wifes car (can even hear it over her) it went to garage on saturday but they couldnt find any play in bearing but today its booked in for warrenty work so there gona change the hub!

Lets see if it cures the problem!?!?!?!

Try getting the car upto the speed it starts to happen & then do a Tyre warm up precedure, Like in Formula One, Swinging left to right, Increasing speed also, Generally with a wheel bearing, The Pitch/Tone changes as the load differs from wheel to wheel Etc..

If you swing Left, Your loading the Left, Swing right Etc... It can help identify ..

i should get my bearing done! its been droning for about 6k now! LMAO

I'm not sure about this swing left loads up left idea, I'd think its the oposite as the loading changes on to the other wheel. Mainly you will find that these bearings are not quite as co-operative as the old days when you had a couple of taper bearings that knackered their balls and/or tracks - these old ones always sounded rough as badgers bottoms and got slack. A little more detective work or lucky guessing will work just as well. Anyway, if one side has failed why not just replace both as the other one will probably be "on its way" - but you will never hear it over the first one!

garaged changed the hub this morning and our droneing has gone just still got the moaning but thats my fault I married her

I had the same problem with my octy,it would drone and increase with speed, but when i jacked it up, there was no play in the bearings and they sounded fine.If i drove in a straight line,it sounded like i had a 747 in the back, but if i turned right the noise would stop.I changed the rear hub today, which took about half an hour, and the noise has gone.:thumbup:Iwwould change the hub asap and have peace and quiet return.
