Fuel Efficiency - My Way

Featured Replies

Nothing clever or expensive, but over the past few months, my average fuel consumption has dropped from 53mpg to 59mpg (long term test - avg over 1,600 miles).

Basically about 2 months ago i had a 1.4TDI Polo as a courtesy car for a few days. I was appalled by the lack of lift and torque out of this diesel engine. Accelerating from 2,000rpm was rougher than my Octy from 1,000 rpm. I got used to the lack of power and having to rev high, which made me appreciate the pull from the Octy more.

When i got back into my own car i decided to conciously drive at lower revs where possible.

My daily commute is 28miles round trip into the centre of Belfast. I am always late and therefore end up in tail backs on the motorway from about 4 miles out of the city. Then when i leave the Motorway i have about 1.5miles of stop start traffic light traffic.

My weekend mileage is somewhat better (countryside), usually with a few short drives (to the takeaway etc) and some longer runs to see family (50ml round trip).

I have a tuning box, and still give the car the odd blast when on my own (short runs), this hasn't changed:D.

Anyway, now in towns/ cities etc i only let the car get to about 1,500rpm (1,750rpm if on a hill) before selecting the next gear then it drops back to about 1,100rpm. I don't feather the accelerator, but keep my foot firm and get the car up to speed probably as quickly as i would have previously.

The nice thing is that i now realise the car pulls fantastically well from 1,000rpm and is smooth with it. At proper road speed (50mph+) i drive as normal and overtake as normal.

I haven't made a sacrifice in speed or smoothness, and have not altered anything other than my town/city drive style. The tuning box does over exaggerate mpg (so i'm told), but this is true all the time, so the 10% increase in mpg is (as far as i'm concerned) accurate.

If you're still awake, thanks for reading. I was so chuffed when i saw the long term mpg on the computer this morning (while changing from miles left in tank) that i had to proclaim my good news.

Not sure how good that is for your DMF though, it may be that it is ok as you are below the torque spike I guess by changing up so quickly

A pair of decent driving shoes that let you feel the pedals also helps. Warmer weather has the VRs returning 60.4 MPG mostly B road stuff. However it is 'tractor season' so a few healthy 15 to 70 in 2nd and 3rd keeps the turbo clean.

i can get up to 45mpg on the 10 miles to work in a petrol car, its all to do with planning ahead and block changing, getting up to speed and keeping the revs down. i can also do the same journey and get under 30mpg by booting it and not planning a head and basically putting it have a very heavy foot. the cost of planning ahead will save you more than chipping the car for economy.

I've found that since removing my dragon box, I've lost 3 - 4 mpg on average per tankful (measured, not the trip computer). TBH I was surprised and once out of warranty it will be on its way to get mapped properly!

MoggyTech: no idea how you can get over 60mpg, if thats a genuine reading, from your vRS. I don't drive particularly hard and barely make 47 per tankful...

How in the world are you able to do this?, I have a 1.2 fabia and i get around 47mpg driving like miss daisey?! :(

been thinking as its been getting warmer mpg should improve anyway.

If those figures are true and not taken from the on baord computer then good on ya!!!!!

As can be seen from my sig using a mpg calculator that takes your exact mileage and fuel amount etc... i get a lot lower than that. My driving is around 80-90% motorway driving at between 70 and 90 mph.

My car has a dragon box fitted but our other vRS does not and returns figures of around 1mpg less.

Cheers

Dave.

I've got a years worth of data in my spritmonitor account and averages 45mpg over 10k miles.

How anyone gets over 60mpg....

Same here.... with two cars.

only problem is that driving like this might lead to the dreaded sticky turbo problem. Mind you if you give a good regular blast you may be OK.

  • 2 weeks later...

On a trip from deep in the peak district to Northampton Via Loughbourough (about 150 miles) with 4 mates and a packed boot from an overnight stay the car told me I had been doing 53.3mpg, It suprised me though with the added weight and the steep inclinations which my 1.2 engine struggled a little with in places. Its a new car so I'm waiting to get some accurate figures myself but generally what is the difference between the trip computer and actual figures? I am quite a chilled driver so most of the motorway sections I was between 60-70 and a section was 50 for roadworks but it still seems a lot with the added weight etc.

Over the last 7 years with my last Octy 110 TDI I kept a really close eye on consumption, over that period it averaged 49.4 MPG, fuel computer always read approx 5% high.

Just hope my latest 140 TDI is as good, far too early to tell yet as I've only topped up twice and the engines still tight, but 46.5 Actual and computer says 48.6 seems pretty good so far.

my work commute is approx 60miles per shift and I'm also logging my milage in a fuel calculator and I'm averaging about 50mpg although I now car share which means most of my driving when I drive will now all be 30-40mph limits and stop starts instead on crusing on the motorway

I think the 110 engine is a cracker and alot of these "eco" car engines arn't that much better than it in the mpg and power side of things. but i suppose the emissions are alot are higher on the older tdi engine like i have got in my octy.

eg Volvo eco drive 1.6D 108bhp 177lb ft torque 62.8 mpg

thats not far from the fighting weight of the 110 and its how old now? but i will admit i have no idea about the emissions and i'm not saying the 110 is as good as that engine is but its just interesting which direction some of these eco engines are going.
