173mph driver spared jail

Featured Replies

105 in a 50 should be a ban for life and a custodial sentence. That's rank stupidity.

Not necessarily.

There are roads by me that are a two lane dual carriageway with a central reservation and crash barriers , wide verges and no side roads that connect to them.

It's the sort of road that in a lot of places would be a 70mph NSL and it's not all that dangerous to do a three figure speed.

Other 50mph roads are far more hazardous

It's twice as fast as one would expect traffic to be on that road. I cannot see how that's anything but stupidly irresponsible. Would 60mph in a 30 zone be acceptable?

Interestingly 173kph is 107mph...

Methinks they might have had the kph/mph setting wrong??

Someone I know got 3 points and £60 fine for doing 73mph in a 30 last month!

pah, you want to try entering a speed limit at three times the limit or if you've been taking some 'brave' pills try it at four times ................................. you'll end up dead or killing someone but you'll have a massive adrenalin rush trying! :P ;)

Blimey. Clearly I'm out of touch with what's acceptable. That's astounding.

humour me.

picture a 2 mile stretch of bypass that is a NSL with no fly overs, no paths/cycle lanes at the side, no hard shoulder, no parking area's, no junctions, no round abouts then change that speed limit down to say 30mph. does that mean that on tuesday when its a 70mph limit and has traffic on it 60mph is perfectly acceptable yet on wednesday after it has been changed to a 30mph yet has no traffic on it what so ever and conditions a perfect and clear that same 60mph becomes dangerous and irresponsible?? the road hasn't changed, the conditions have improved yet by your logic the speed is now a mortal sin.

I'm not aware of any such road. Where is it?

it was a hypothetical road, but in oxford there is a 2 mile plus section of dual carriageway that went from having no centre divider and a 70mph limit for over 40 years and everyone went up it at 80mph with no issues yet after an accident that had nothing to do with the road it gained a solid concrete divider and the limit dropped to 50mph, yet by your standards travelling this road now at 80mph is simply crazy despite it having increased safety.

you simply cannot make blanket statements about roads and their limits without knowing the area yourself.

How is 80mph either 55mph more than 50mph or over double 50mph? You seem to be trying to set up a straw-man argument by misrepresenting what I said.

Frankly anyone who thinks 105 in a 50 zone is acceptable isn't mentally fit to drive. I'd forgotten quite how daft some people on this site are.

i'm not misrepresenting anything, i'm simply saying that things aren't always as clear cut as you seem to be making out.

and in the right conditions i would say that 105mph on that stretch of 50mph near me would be safe, so i must be a mental then

so are you saying that 105mph in a 50 limit is un-acceptable, or that 105mph itself is the problem?

To some degree, 105 in a 50 could be deemed dangerous per se, regardless of whether anyone is on the road at the time, or whether it would be deemed 'safe' in certain circumstances on a particular stretch of road.

If you have a blowout at 50, or the national speed limit on any road come to that, you might just stand a chance of avoiding a huge accident. Having the same blowout at 105 I would imagine would decrease that chance considerably.

Even if you are not a danger to other road users, you are causing a danger to yourself.

"So what - it's my life" I hear you cry - but somebody has to pick up the pieces afterwards.

thats a totally different scenario!

theres roads round here that used to be under national restrictions, dual carriageway with central reservation and crash barriers, now been dropped to a 50. its quite common for cars to drive along there fast, usually at rush hour you can be sitting at a steady 60/70 going with the traffic flow. when the road is quieter 3 figure speeds are easily achived, its a 3 or 4 mile straight road.

to compare that with speeding in a 30 which is usually a 30 due to houses or schools running along side the road is just stupid.

i would rather someone doing 60 through a 30 got a bit more than a slap on the wrist than someone caught doing 140 on an empty motorway with a 70 limit imposed.
