Smoking heavily under throttle, any ideas??

Featured Replies

Hi, my colleage has got a vrs that has started to smoke heavily when on anything more than 1/3 throttle. It has a Jabba remap, PD160, EGR bypass etc.

It was running fine, with only light smoke as expected froma remapped car but over the past few weeks has started to smoke badly, think black smoke; suggests to me massive overfuelling . By this, I mean hard to see out of the rear window when booted. It has a minimal power loss.

I suspect it to be a dodgy sensor, maybe MAF or a temp sensor. Any one got any ideas or had similar???

Thanks

Alex

Well mine isnt remapped, but sounds like what was happening to mine. Was a leak on the pipe behind the drivers side headlight going onto intercooler.

As said, as daft as it seems a split but not popped off pipe could be causing this, not enough for you to hear, but enough for the fuel not to burn.

I had a 2cm split on the final boost pipe to the back of the turbo, which I could hear, but mostly down to not having much between me and the engine as the dash is out. If something similar has happened, then that would create the smoke, and not too much in the way of powerloss. As my hybrid even with this 'huge' leak would still happily go past my mates custom mapped vRS?

Id say check all the boost pipes for small splits and tighten them all up, then move onto replacing MAF and MAP sensors

I'd unplug the maf then see if there is any difference...

yeah, mine wasnt even a split, the connection on the end of the intercooler wasnt quite "tight". No boost loss noticed much.

Yup not unheard of one of the lugs go from where the EGR is.

Obv in this case thats uprated, so possibly the one underneath straight off the SMIC or where the uprated FMIC pipe work ends if it has FMIC

boost hoses id say... i ran with the bottom one off for a bit.... smoke screen...

Split boost hose for sure i'd say.

UPDATE:

Swapped all intercooler pipes with another set and car still smokes as much as before. Also swapped a MAF sensor and again makes NO difference.....

Anybody got any more ideas?

Alex

Strange, have you checked the compression on the engine? Could be down perhaps?

Also what are the intake temps? Maybe there is a leak in the intercooler itself rather than pipes

Changed the intercooler as well as the pipes, so not that. Not check compression but does not really seem down on power. I'm still thinking it may be a sensor, possibly fuel temp or air temp or something

Assume the air filter is ok yes?

N75?

New air filter,

Does a PD have an N75 valve?

Anyone near you with VAG-COM??

  • Author

Will get it checked on Vagcom soon, anyone with any oterh ideas?

Alex

Does a PD have an N75 valve?

Yup it certainly does.

I'd be looking at injector balance on VAG COM, its int he first few measured blocks.

have you looked at the pipe coing from the turbo?

have you looked at the pipe coing from the turbo?

Do you mean the small 80 off degree bend underneath the back of the turbo?

If so thats always a good place to check ive had 3cm splits in that pipe before.

However he did say he changed all the pipes etc, and that is a pipe?

have you looked at the pipe coming from the turbo?

That is the one pipe i did not change as it was the one I did not remove from my car when fitting the FMIC. Will have to try this one one day this week

In which case my orginal reply still stands :D Im guessing you will have a 1cm split right on the bend on this pipe

Had a good look at this pipe earlier this evening, did not appear to be any damage to the pipe

Did you take it off at all? Only reason I ask is I spent a good 10 minutes looking annoyed and puzzled at mine, I had replaced all the other pipes/check them over and they were fine, so got under the car, checked this one, and looked perfect, as you can see in the picture (thats actually the damaged piece)

As soon as I took it off however, I could flex it abit more and noticed the split.

Took it off completely and spent about 10min looking over it, bending it etc.

How much is a new one? This is the only pipe not replaced so may just try it.

I wouldnt say its that pipe then im afriad :( Sowwie!

Mine wasnt visable until I took it off, but once I did, you could see the damage

I looked at getting a new one, gave it to a friend of mine that can get things at trade (and no reason to not believe his price) and got back to me with £75 for a new one!

So im currenly having that and any other standard pipe work left over from the Forge pipe work on the Seat Sport cooler uprated to custom jobbies as wont cost much more!
