Main dealer vs independent servicing

BRUN

Recommended Posts

my vRS needs a service in the next 2 months and ive been pricing it up, ive asked main dealers and ive also asked a few respected VAG tuners/workshops

what ive found though, is that the dealers are cheaper !

personally, its going to the dealers, my car has a full Skoda service history which after getting quotes, will be being kept up, IMO it can only maintain the value of the car, i know when i was looking to buy one, i liked the fact it had full dealer service history and valued it

what do you lot think ?

I had the vRoomster serviced at a main dealer (Alex Lawrie Skoda - Liverpool) and it was £110, this included a litre of top up oil, screenwash left over's, car washed and hoovered.

Great Service, and cheaper than independent's.

It depends on who is cheapest and whether you are going to keep the car for long. If its under warranty still then go to your dealer. If there is a slight difference in price and/or you are going to sell in few years time then a full Dealer service is good. If you plan to keep it for a while then, of course, go for what's the cheapest.

Well I just priced up a first variable service for our Octy 4x4:

Skoda Main Dealer No 1 - £230

Skoda Main Dealer No 2 - £170

Local VAG Specialist we've used in the past - £119

All using OE parts with full diagnostics facilities etc.

So for me it is also a no-brainer - especially as the Local VAG Specialist has over 25 years main dealer experience and will probably do the work himself rather than getting the new trainee to do it...

well in all cases the dealer is cheaper, by £30+ and a free courtesy car aswell

those are the kind of price they quoted for my 60k service, rather then a 'general' 10k service

I'd stick to the main dealers. :)

Remember when I was getting quotes for the fabia's 60K service with cambelt. Was cheaper to to the main dealers. So it was back to Alex Lawrie for me :)

To me it no point wasting a full dealer service history even if it costs a little extra (in this case it doesn't)

Nicci's Clio however doesnt have a full dealer service history but an independant one. But as you know Brun its going to are local friendly Renault dealer while its with us. :) That reminds me to give you a ring.

Tony is it just me or has Alex Lawrie drop their prices? My last service (70K) was the cheapest service I've ever had

It looks like it John .... for me they where the cheapest and to be honest the best, Tony Casford in service is a star, even when I go in asking for daft things like seat's or bit's of wiring, he just get's on with it and gives me a great price. They are doing cruise as a retrofit on the Roomster next week, I was offered a discount on the labour rate so it's not worth me getting my own hands dirty and skin shredded fitting it.

If anyone is close enough to give these a call then do it, you may well be surprised

i was going to go to Preston, but if the Liverpool dealer is a good one its a lot closer for me

The guys in Liverpool are great. Like Fluff said Tony & also Paul on the parts/service desk are nice guys and again I completely trust them on my car.

Interesting - I have never known a main dealer to be cheaper. I wonder if they've dropped their prices recently to be more competetive???

My last service - Dealer: £320.00, Indie: £170.00

No prizes for guessing which one i went for.

Just to throw something else into the ring;

Our Services | IN'n'OUT

I know someone who has used the one in Cardiff and a few who have used the one at Cribbs in Bristol and they have found them to be fantastic. I am not sure about 40k/60k services but I am sure they can accomodate if you call them

Where abouts are you?

One of my mates has beed a mechanic since before he could drive, and is s#it hot.

He's just started as a mobile mechanic, and is really cheap.

He's in the Chippenham / Swindon area.

i dont think it would be worth his while mate and i want a stamp in my book

could he provide a 10k service using genuine parts and the proper oil, a courtesy car aswell, for £100? cos thats what the dealers are now charging

some of the quotes ive had are from such places and are £30+ more than the dealers charge, which is approx 1/3rd more expensive

I really find that amazing give the quotes I've had in the past and dealer overheads - they must be really desperate for work if that is the case...

Even Alex Lawrie - who peple noted were cheap are about £50 more expensive than the independants...

For me, Alex Lawrie where £9 cheaper than the independant's and they washed and hoovered it, and allowed me to deplete their tasty flavia coffee supplies whilst I waited.
