Main dealer vs independent servicing

Featured Replies

Fabia 1.9tdi estate 2006 40k quoted £268 for service plus £41 for brake fluid change.

This is about twice as much as i paid on previous fabia tdi.

Hi,

I've got a 2yr old Fabia vRS and its due its 2nd service.

I've priced around with 3 local ish dealers and they are wanting around £200 for a service. The local V.A.G. specialist wants £210 + VAT, but he says that is for a full service rather than just the oil and filter which he reckons is all that the dealers will do.

What i want to know, is how is the warrenty affected if i take it to a non Skoda garage.

What do the dealers actually do for a 2yr service.

Does it need the brake fluid changed. (Skoda seem to think it does)

To add another spanner in the works, my dad has his own garage and says it'll cost about £100 for him to do a full service on it. Obviously i'd rather my father did it as at least i know it will be done right, as well as the cost.

I'm gonna try ringing the dealer tomorrow to see if they will tell me what they do for a 2yr service and they will no doubt tell me the warrenty will be void or something if they don't service it within the warrenty period, but its worth a phone call to see if i can make anything out.

Any help would be appriciated. (sorry to hijack the thread)

Thanks

Ian

Get your dad to do it with genuine VAG parts, if the correct parts are used it should not affect the warranty, see here The Office of Fair Trading: Servicing ties removed from new car warranties. And the brake fluid does need doing every 2 years.

For a 2 year service they will change the oil/filter, brake fluid, and not a lot else (others with more idea please correct me on this if I'm wrong).

Yes there is no cartel for warranty approved servicing, as long as you follow Skoda servicing schedules and used approved parts.

It is not only Skoda main dealers that have reduced their service charges, I've seen many a newspaper ad locally with Ford, Vauxhall and Honda dealers offering discounted prices. So I guess the big companies are desperate for business too.

Mine doesnt have a full Skoda service history. But it does have a full folder of receipts to prove work was done when it was required. garage was an independant. Since buying it my local garage (which I have trusted with over 15 other cars of mine) has done the oil change, fitted my suspension and RARB, just recently he did my clutch kit too. Price is £33 p.h & he will come and pick the car up from my house and deliver it back once its finished if i want!

Your'e lucky you have a decent garage to trust your car to. Many people don't receive that kind of service or don't know what they want, so hope that someone like kwik fit will do some kind of good service.

Very well said

Although with the advent of more modern computer controlled stuff then often you do have to go to the dealer or specialist as some independents don't have the equipment.

I know my garage has got a load of tools but just not the facilities to read the on board computer.

Back to topic - No your warranty should not be afffected as long as VAG/Skoda approved parts are used.

Thanks for the replys.

I'll have a read through the Office of Fair Trading link and see what it says,

My dad says that he will strip the brakes out and clean them up as he says he's seen all too often newish cars that have been serviced at dealerships with brakes that have never been to bits and are all seized up.

What about oil? Does it have to be Skoda oil or can it be his usual oil that he uses as long as it is the same grade.

Thanks again.

There's a sticky at the top of the Fabia section. You need oil suitable for a PD diesel.

I thought you have an Inspection service every 2 years/services, so for the 2nd year service it would be more than an oil change. I suppose still being relatively new the car should not have anything wrong with it anyway.

I would go with your dad, because like you, my dealer would not fully strip the brake pads and inspect them. When this local garage serviced my mothers 53 Fabia, in November, they found that the OEM pads were coming away from the backing plate. Skoda would have not spotted this.

personally on a car only 2 years old, take it to the dealers, your resale value would be affected by more than the £100 saving should you come to sell it in a year or so

when i was looking for mine, i didnt even look seriously at any that didnt have full dealer history

Unfortunately that is indeed the way things are, and can you blame any prespective buyer? Personally I have tended to buy new and keep for about ten years, so main dealer service history plays no part in my plan. So if you intend to buy new and change every two or so years then main dealer servicing is the smart way to play it to maximise residual value and re-sale potential.

I have no plans to change it in the next year or two, with it being the LE i was intending keeping it for a good few years, but who knows, my wife drives it mostly, its very rare i get in it and shes happy with it, so as long as shes happy shes not at me about wanting to change it.

For what reason didn't you look at a car that hadn't been serviced at a dealer. Past experience's with dealers servicing my cars is purely the reason i'm looking elsewhere, i would only go back to the dealer to keep the warranty valid, but if it doesn't matter where it gets serviced to keep the warranty, then i think it will be going to my dads.

Do you mean the variable servicing?

My previous Octavia was on variable and it didn't get looked at until it was 2 year old. The Fabia has had 1 service at a year old and is now due another.

Do you mean the variable servicing?

No, What I meant was every alternate service was a an inspection one. If you do 10,000 miles or less then the 2nd one, in the 2nd year will be an inspection one. Next years service ie. 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc. will just be an oil service (Oil + Filter Change)

from what ive read, the EU ruling expires next year and so far no plans are in place to put it back into place, so your going to NEED it servicing at the dealers to keep your warranty once again
