Turbo on its way out?

Recommended Posts

Right, past day my turbo has started whisling slighly more than before. So if it is the turbo, what choices do i have, and what sort of dolla am i looking at for each.

If i were to get a uprated turbo, would fitting be the same as a std one? (apart from the map obviously)

How much would a turbo be? How much to hybrid one? Where is the best place to buy one from?

Sorry for all the questions, but all i know at the moment is its gonna be costly!

How much more has it been whistling? is it really loud? When my turbo blew, the whistling was the same as normal but it went bang and that was that :D

You can get a PD150 turbo, but I think you have to rotate the housing to get the correct alignment of the hoses, but somebody who has done one will be able to help you more there.

If you take it to Skoda, it's gonna be about £1500 for a new turbo, but I got mine done at a local trusted garage for half that.

You can probably get a VNT turbo, somewhere in the region of £300 - £500 as it includes the exhaust manifold, but people on here do have the odd one for sale.

Can't advise on anything hybrid or where to get one from but there will be other people along soon who have 'been there and done that'

HTH a little bit...:)

Stuttering can also be caused by a boost leak. Those clips are bl*dy awful desing and even at stock boost they start to leak after a while as the engine movement just works them a little. Not enough to come out, but enough to leak :(

In particular the clip straight off the turbo (the 90 degree bend) is notoriously bad, and near the SMIC.

i did check them all myself, but I also had it looked over at the local VW specalist. They said there was oil leaking from the Turbo casing :thumbdwn: but Im not sure if that is normal. Oil seems to leak from all the other hoses.

I agree the stock clips are rubbish. I have had the SMIC one go, so has matt, do you know the best place to get a new host coming off the turbo? most places only seem to do the SMIC hose.

I had to replace mine when it blew off the turbo and the metal piece was damaged, I ordered one in from the Oxford based Skoda dealer. In the short term it was salvaged by getting a new clip (Ross ;)) and I held the pipe in place with cable ties. Very messy though at the time :(

Give Turbo Dynamics in Northampton a ring, they can rebuild and balance your turbo with a 48hr turn around. Or, if you have extra pennies to spend (alot more!) you could have it hybrid-nised (sorry, I know it isn't spelt that way...) which will give you much more power - you will have to uprate your clutch, IC, suspension and brakes mind :)
