Pole Position!

Featured Replies

Jenson Button is on Pole for the Australian Grand Prix! In fact the new BrawnGP team have taken both front row positions.

Could Button really be a challenger to Hamilton this season?

 Just watched it, glad Jensen has a good drive this season.....

Let's hope so, come on Jenson!!!

Anyone see Eddie Jordan and David Coultard 'verbally jousting' on the BBC coverage? I don't think they like each other much...

Funny that the other teams are moaning about the regulations just because a 'minor' team has come through.

Let's hope it lasts throughout the season.

Would be good to see Jenson come good at last after all the hype of the last two seasons.

How might he have fared against the rest if he'd been in a better car last season ?

You've got to hand it to Ross Brawn and the new Brawn racing team in F1. A few months ago when Honda announced that it was pulling the plug on the F1 team things looked pretty grim. Now the Brawn racing team that have evolved from the Honda team are the team to beat on the pace of the car.

So from the end of last year to now the team have put together a car with a Mercedes engine and performed far better than the likes of McLaren & Ferrari who have had plenty of time & money to deliver a package with the new rules.

I hope this is a new era for F1 and a return to the old days when smaller independent teams can compete and beat the big boys.

Ross Brawn has always had success in motorsport, but to create a potentially winning team within a few months is amazing. Well done Ross Brawn and the team.

Footnote: If Brawn do win the first F1 GP of the season I have no doubt the big boys will have the new diffuser banned & the results reversed.

From what I've read, it's the same old story.

The big boys don't like it when they don't have the nous to come up with something that an intelligent designer can, and they get miffed if they don't win.

I totally agree with the sentiments above - unless there is a blatant breach of the regulations, design should be allowed to prosper, and the rule makers shouldn't change the rules just because someone like Ross Brawn has more initiative than anyone else.

6 different cars in the top six grid positions - now thats what racing is all about!

Nice to see Jenson smiling for a change after the awful cars he has had to drive for the last two seasons. The only downside with the new Brawn team is the prospect of Beardy Branson getting his fizzhog on the telly now that Virgin are their sponser.

It's great to see more variety , but they won't have this level of advantage all season.

Whatever the final verdict is about the rear diffusers it won't be long before all the teams either have one or don't have one which will close things up a lot.

Still , top drive by Jenson this morning.

Well, the protested cars were not declared illegal, so whatever the outcome of Renaults appeal, the results will stand.

Go Brawn :D

I commend your optimism and sense of fair play but.....

.......this is F1 we're talking about - wanna bet on it?

Sounds like the silly stuff is starting all over again - Toyota put to the back of the grid and you've got to laugh at Mclaren's position. I hope we have a new world champ that's still British to continue to the run.

The toyotas' seem to have too much flex in their rear wings & have therefore broken the rules. The teams would love to have rear wings that are variable to give maximum downforce in the corners and minimum drag on the straights, but that is not allowed in the rules.

The rear diffuser issue hasn't gone away yet, although the stewards at Melbourne have deemed them to be legal at the circuit the final decision will be in Paris, by which time the other teams will have produced their own diffusers to a similar design just to cover their bets!

That was the best Qualifying session i have seen in a long time! Its a real pleasure to see the smaller teams doing so well. I really hope Brawn GP do well this season, its a proper good under dog story in the making :D

Fair play on Ross and co.

It's the same old story though TBH. Those at the bottom of the grid gave up on 2008 quite early, with many developing their cars soon after the start of 2008 season.

I'm glad Williams will be back on form and back in contention. But I fear once the appeal's thrown out and the others copy the diffuser tactic, we'll see the usual players back at the top.

How much will Honda be kicking themselves?

And, even more impressively, both Brawn cars are quite heavy with fuel. Fuelled for a 2 stop strategy, Jenson will be coming in around lap 22 & Barichello around lap 23 - Compare that to the Ferrari's in 6th & 7th place on the grid who were lighter on fuel, with only around 18 laps worth. So it was a fantastic performance from both drivers and the team.

Can I make a prediction for tomorrow.

The Brawns stay ahead for most of the race, then either crash or break down. The Ferrari's work there way to near the front. If the Brawns or Williams do win, then after the race The Ferrari International Assistance decide these new rear diffuses on all cars are now illegal disqualifying those cars. Ferrari wins as usual. Normal service resumes. :thumbdwn:

I really do hope thou, Jenson can win, to make a change from other race winners.
