VRS Cambelt

Featured Replies

Just to fetch this back up again,

I have just booked my vrs in for its 50k service and asked for a price on cambelt being changed at 60k and they said it doesnt need doing untill 80k on mine !

My vrs is on a 06 plate with a BLT engine

I think 80k is a long time to wait to have the belt changed I'll be asking again on thursday

Surely if you get them to put it in writing, should the worst happen and the cambelt snaps, yuo've got a nice backup of a skoda dealership informing you that you did not need to have the cambelt done, therefore their problem?

r1chard, I have an 06 plate VRS, and on this engine (BLT) its 80K or 4 years, so yours will need doing next year when its four (if you dont reach 80K this year). Im on 50K now, and have just booked in for a lube service, but when it hits four in March next year even if I am under 80K the belt will be changed.

I had a letter fairly recently from Skoda re-stating this, that the belt should be changed at 80K or four years.

Cheers.

you said you had a qoute for your belt tensioner and water pump for £270

i was just wondering was this qoute from a skoda garage?

i'm on 62 thousand on my 56 plate vRS "fabia" not sure if its a ASZ or a BLT engin anyhow i want to keep a full skoda service history and am going to be booking in the car next week. hence wondering weather or not you had the qoute from skoda??

My new VRS has gone in today for a cambelt change and the dealer here in Newbury told me that it needs to be done every 4 years...!!

has it gone in skoda for it jimjam? how much are they charging you?

do you need to get the tensioner and water pump done at the same time do you know?

Hiya,

Im not sure as I have just purchased my VRS from Skoda and work is being carried out as part of the exchange for my Roadster. So unfortunatley, I can't help you on that one!!!!!

timing belt is a easy job on any of the vrs fabia i have done, can do them in 2 hours changing a water pump to for 250 this includes a service filters and oil

Mmmm... BLT

My 2005 vRS is coming up to 60k & 4 years. Just to clarify, I will need the timing belt changed as it is not a BLT engine?

Whether its a BLT engine or not Timewarp, it needs doing at 4 years regardless of mileage. The difference appears to be that the ASZ needs doing at 60K (if reached before 4 years) and the BLT at 80K (again if reached before 4 years).

Ta. Just checking to make sure.

how easy is it to the the tensioner? iv just had the cambelt and waterpump done for £260, but didnt have the tensioner done? well not to my knowledge or is it a standard thing to replace it??? i know on my Golf VR6 there was a tensioner that i replaced myself which took about 2 secs at the rear of the engine.....is this similar or an internal tensioner?

how much is the cambelt service at the dealers ?

I thought they were all 60k or every 4 years... personally id rather get it changed early :)

My dealer got me to change the belt at 40,000 and six years on my petrol 1.4 16v twin cam.

Consistently inconsistent.

Don't you love the no-nonsense approach that Skoda GB permits to be diseminated on its behalf - bearing in mind that the secret squirrels from Customer Service at Chessington probably keep an eye on posts from this site.

They seem to have about as much control on their dealerships as HM govt has on its policy !

People are at fault here too though. How any of us actually read their handbook and familiarise themselves with their cars service schedule:confused:(don't attack me I don't mean on here but in general)

I think Skoda are looking into their dealer networks thoroughly and are trying to get more big professional outfits to take on their cars. Beadles a big concern in Maidstone Kent has just taken on the brand and I have heard good things. Murray Skoda in Newton Abbott Devon who did my turbo when it let go are also ace:thumbup:

Totally agree with Matt.

Clunkclick, its a different engine so why would the Cam belt intervals be the same ?? You cant compare apples with oranges.

This thread has got me worried now. I have a 53 plate VRS which I think has the ASZ engine. Anyway, I can see no sign of having the cambelt changed when looking at my servicesin the log book.

15/09/03 - Delivery inspection

Skoda Dealer:

20/09/04 - 6718 miles

19/09/05 - 10929 miles

11/09/06 - 13649 miles

03/05/07 - 14373 miles (this is service when I purchased car from dealer)

Uncle has his own garage and has done all servicing since I purchased car:

19/04/08 - 24120 miles

16/03/09 - 32668 miles

Now the car has extremely low miliage (due to the first owner) but due to the age should I have had the cambelt done by now? when are they to be done normally? when looking at the book it seems to be at 60k, does not mention time just says in addition to inspection service every 60k "toothed belt and tensioning pulley of camshaft: replace (PDi engines)

Want to find out so I can speak to my uncle if need be.

If it was mine, I would just get it replaced...

Peace of mind is worth a lot

My son has just bought a 54 plate(Dec 04) fabia vrs with 27k on the clock. I asked dealer to put new cam belt on as it was over 4 yrs old. Wasn't very happy when I told him 4yrs or 60k and sucked his cheeks in. Checked with service dept who agreed with me and dealer made a deal with me. I'd pay for the cambelt kit £90 and they'd fit it for free, which was done a week after picking the car up.

When we picked the car up all the service documentation came in the wallet, the last service report (Dec 08) recommended cam belt change,at 4 years. So it seems 4yrs or 60k from the dealers service dept.

Redcar I don't even think you should have paid the £90. The dealer should know the service schedules and change the belt as part of the pre sales prep that dealers are happy to bang on about: all this approved used car stuff.

Rik I'd get that belt changed now. When I had my belt changed there didn't seem to be any wear in the belt but then there's the tensioner spring as well to consider.

Mate i also have a 53 plate vRS and my belt etc were done at 4 yrs @ 58k

But its due at 60k anyway, I'm only at 35k.

Yes but as people have stressed it is time or miliage. Mine is 4 years now and the mileage was 37000: I had the belt changed. Just not worth the risk of sending your valves to search for life in another universe for a few hundred quid: It's your call;);
