Thermal Switch seal.. O-ring or Silicone?

Featured Replies

Hi! I´ve seen that is very common to have coolant leak in Fabias around the thermal switch that goes into the radiator

Now, Ive read a lot regarding the solution. Everyone recommends to place a "seal" cause there isnt a factory one. Is this seal an O-ring? which sizes are recommended? Can I use thermal silicone like the ones used in head gaskets?

Also, when removing this switch I´m going to lose pretty much all my coolant. How much coolant/water mixture (50/50 water/coolant) must I add again, just to have an idea how much to buy :D

Thanks! and btw.... attached are some pics of my mess.

You really want a small fibre washer or wrap a small bit of PTFE tape around the switch.

You will need around 2.5 litres of G12++ coolant (from any VAG garage or TPS centre) so two bottles. Put the G12++ in and top up with water.

Panama, if its true, might not be covered by TPS (yet), having never seen this sort of thing on a VAG car (yet), does that one not look like the switch is leaking internally - ie through the actual switch body and not at the flange thread? If so a new switch is needed as well as the G12++. Maybe the OP should scrub that area clear of G12 curd and then remove the connector and srub it clean as well - and while you are at it try to look back into the sensor body to see if its dry and the plug pins and socket pins are clean and shiny.

Down here in Panama pretty much all type of warranties suck (i.e. electronics). Skoda gives 2 year warranty and 10 yrs in the paint (think is same for Europe?). Their service shop specializes in breaking plastic parts and putting things back exactly the way they werent.

Anyways.. will do the cleaning thingy and keep an eye on it, though I did it once and Im pretty sure it was around the part that is screwed to the radiator. I guess it looks like that due to the pressure the "leak" is subjected to.

I´ll post my results and findings ;)

Cheers !
