outlook express issue

Well- It's worked fine up to now.

Basically all sent items are queuing up in the outbox due to

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

my email is an ancient freeserve one I have had for about 10 years now. Not sure if this matters. Emails download fine, just won't send. On XP. Orange have been informed

All I could dig up was

This error is quite self explanatory. It means that Windows reported that a connection attempt or idle connection timed out.

If this error occurs during a connection attempt (eg in a VPOP3 - SMTP Client connection problem error message), then it means that Windows couldn't connect to the ISP mail server within a fixed time (the timeout limit is fixed within Windows itself). This problem can either mean that your ISP is having a problem, that you are connecting through a slow proxy (You can assign retry parameters on the Utilities -> Misc Settings -> Network Tweaks page), or that your Dial-up connection is faulty.

If this error occurs whilst a connection is in progress (eg in a VPOP3 - POP3 Client Problem error message), then it means that the connection was idle for a set time - this timeout time can be changed on the Utilities -> Misc Settings -> Network Tweaks page.

;)

A quick fix would be to use another SMTP server. If you have another broadband provider try sending e-mail through their SMTP instead by changing your server settings for 'smtp server' - I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Outlook Express so can't give helpful instructions :)

How long has this been going on for?

Maybe just a server down somewhere.

Mind my dad (also on orange) had a similar issue a while ago, but I'm struggling to remember what the problem was. I seem to remember that there was an issue with a particular mail (to be sent) and deleting it cleared the log jam.

Re yegnold's suggestion, i seem to think that orange block other peoples smtp servers...

Oh, or a firewall/router change that means you no longer has access to the required port (25 iirc)

Am i right in thinking that you have moved house, and thus are no longer on the same ISP as before?

Most ISP's will only allow smtp connections from people on their broadband, Why should you get to use their servers for free when you dont pay for their connection?

Most likely you will have to change your smtp server address to that of your new ISP. Might be wrong, but just a thought.

I have a yahoo account and have the same problem.

Yahoo changed a few things and I had to pay $10 for the year to send through outlook

Anyone know the SMTP for BT then? :o I am logged on to the net using a homehub and my wireless dongle. Never realised this would cause an issue. I left my broadband connection at my old place as I got it through my mobile and as I didn't need it in the new place I left all my broadband stuff at that place..... Guess we're getting to the root of the problem now. :)

OK - I just tried smtp.btclick.com after a google search but now it won't authorise. Will I ever be able to send my usual freeserve emails via outlook express at the new house? :( It would be a royal pain in the backside to have to use webmail every time I want to reply to an email (received fine through BT wireless and freeserve email account! )

New error - edited for privacy issues

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'jason@HIS EMAIL ADDRESS. Subject 'Re: TRACK TIME', Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'smtp.btclick.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550

OK - after more googling it seems I need the account & password for the BT account this house is setup for. Through O.E you have to tell it these details to allow you to send emails from a non BT Yahoo! account.... I will get there in the end.

Not permitted hints at the exact problem ;)

Your best bet is probably to set up your hotmail account to pull the pop3 stuff in. That works for sure :)

That's correct. BT only usuallly allow authenticated SMTP, and pretty much all ISPs only allow sending through their SMTP servers from their own network unless authenticated, as otherwise it's an 'open relay' and will get abused by spammers.

smtp.bt.com ;)

you could of course join the 21st century and leave freeserve behind :P when did they dissapear again?

Sign yourself up for a googlemail account, you can add your freeserve address to gmail so it will collect it once an hour and deliver it to your gmail inbox. You can then send out using gmail with your freeserve address and eventually leave your freeserve one behind. Thats not mentioning the spam filtering built in to googlemail!

I just wanna get my freeserve emails in and OUT my outlook express! :(

Will have a play tomorrow. :)

You can set up a googlemail account and access your email through IMAP - meaning you have both an Outlook account and a webmail account that mirror each other exactly.. ;)

Got abit peed off with outlook /outlook express ,and since playing with win 7 /IE8 which don't have either got microsoft live mail- seems alot user friendly and it's a lot easier to set up user accounts - most just require you;re account number and password -no messing around with OL /EXpress setup. Wouldn't gp back now -even got my XP set up to use live mail -IMHO worth looking at ,if only for the ease of setup (and if you've got outlook /outlook express -itll import all you're settings)
