Formula One descends into farce again.

BBC SPORT | Motorsport | Formula 1 | Hamilton loses Aussie GP points

" Lewis Hamilton and McLaren have been stripped of their podium finish and all points at the Australian Grand Prix.

The sport's world governing body said they were excluded "for providing evidence deliberately misleading to the stewards at the hearing on 29 March".

A post-race hearing promoted Hamilton from fourth to third after Trulli was penalised for passing the Englishman while the safety car was out.

Trulli and Toyota have been reinstated to third place.

The Italian was initially handed a 25-second penalty for the incident which saw him demoted to 12th. "

Here we go again.....

Just read that. WTF?? If anything Hamilton should still have 4th?

It's a total mystery.

Hamilton passed Trulli when he left the track.

Trulli then rejoined the track and reclaimed the place.

The verdict on the day was that Trulli shouldn't have done that so was penalised.

If the new verdict says that he was ok to have done that then result should be back to the order in which the cars crossed the line with Hamilton in 4th.

This "providing misleading evidence" sounds very much like "not being Ferrari so we've made something up to penalise you"

Crazy

Just another thought - with all the technology (telemetry, GPS tracking and cameras) that is involved in modern F1, is there any need at all for driver testimony to help in a decision such as this?

Yes there is.

Telemetry will show throttle and brake usage , and so on.

It won't show *why* this was the case which is where a driver's input was needed to distinguish between deliberately slowing to let someone pass or simply driving at "best speed" and being unable to prevent them passing

Think the decision has more to do with McLaren apparently lying about the incident, if you read through the waffle of that statement.

I approach this from a pretty neutral stance - I don't really have any liking for one team over the other; I just like to see a decent quality of racing :)

I just like to see a decent quality of racing :)

which is why i stick to touring cars!! :D

As has already been said, I think the point is that what McLaren said at the original hearing has been found not to agree with the recordings of the team radio. If that is the case, then IMO a dsq is appripriate under F1 rules.

What would be even more sensible would be to change to NASCAR style rules, where Lewis keeps the place, but he and the team are fined points for misleading the stewards.

i was totally hacked off with F1/FIA after last years Spa race debarcle, and vowed nevr to watch it again , but thought i would give it one more chance this new season , but alas they've F0cked it up again for me , forever

and lets not forget that the mess might get worse if the Brawn team and the other 2 teams brought before the stewards for the alleged illegal rear undertrays have their race results from Australia taken away from them

F1 , you're having a laugh

Under the new scoring system isn't 3rd place to Lewis about as much use as a choccy fire guard?

i think so!!!

not sure all the new rules and regs are confusing to say the least and the rubbish that goes on in the fia is taking this sport down very fast:mad:

they need to get a grip and all play by the same rule card and be even with there punishments

WTF?

Looking at all the see here links form the current story to previous ones, I'm totally lost now.

Trulli spun out, team asked stewards who were too busy to respond, so let Trulli have the place to take him later. Yet that was wrong?

The write of this will be even more confusing.

And IF the FIA decide to remove either Lewis or Mclaren, then surely the other teams must wonder what the point is.

Luckly Brawn knows the FIA well enough to have been left alone, otherwise he'd surely have been struck off for having red on his car when not a Ferrari or some other ludicrous rule.

He(Hamilton)or They(Mclaren) mis-lead the stewards so deserved the punishment.... end of....

He(Hamilton)or They(Mclaren) mis-lead the stewards so deserved the punishment.... end of....

But how is the question that isnt very clear from anything in the public domain.

They knocked the most wins rule on the head, so 3rd place was very useful, was!

He(Hamilton)or They(Mclaren) mis-lead the stewards so deserved the punishment.... end of....

I totally agree - Martin Brundles's comments in the article tend to suggest that there was something a bit more sinister to it.

Brings Lewis Hamilton down to earth a bit, and makes him sound a bit desperate, even at this early stage in the season.

He'd have come out with more honour if he'd have kept his mouth shut and graciously accepted fourth. This incident makes it look as if he's tried to con his way into a podium place, and been found out.

NAUGHTY BOY - GO SIT AT THE BACK OF THE CLASS

End of the day, he and Mclaren shot themselves in the foot.... Hamilton told the press after the race he had let trulli by, under instruction from the team..... then when he stepped before the fia at the inquiry, he conveniently forgot to mention it when they specifically asked him if he let them by! Infact, he flat out denied it. Likewise when asked if the team asked him to let trulli by, Hamilton/Mclaren again denied it........ And then the fia listened to his staement to the media, where he had all ready dropped himself right in it! and just to bang the final nail in, they listened to the teams radio conversation, and what do you know? the team did ask him to let trulli by..........

Mclaren seem to love making they're own lives a misery....... they are their own worst enemy!

to add link......

It is kinda dumb to come up with two stories, the one they didn't 'like' being the one that was publicly verifyiable - muppets

Ok, now will the "anti McSlimeball conspiracy theorists" accept that McSlimeball are actually no better than Team RedSlime?

Under the new scoring system isn't 3rd place to Lewis about as much use as a choccy fire guard?

The points system this year, is no different to last year....... The medal idea was was thrown out at the 11th hour as the proper procedures were not adhered to to implement the change. So 3rd place may well of been very handy for Lewis in the long run.

Perhaps they have so little confidence in the car ever being good enough for the championship this year, that they thought they would play dumb and hope nobody noticed to get that one extra vital point.......... And with Ferrari their regular sparring partners scoring none, they are scrabbling to get as many points before Ferrari get back in the mix........

Oh well, now they have none! and egg all over their faces

F1 GP is as much about politics (if not more so) then driving. Shame really :(

Wish there was more focus on the driving, the cars and just racing the blasted things. The race itself was pretty decent I thought :)

The FIA website has got recordings of the media inetrview and the team radio conversation....

Stewards Decision Australian GP

What is not included is any transcript or recording of the initial stewards enquiry, so we have to believe the FIA report of what was said or not said at that hearing.

The thing I find most surprising is that the original stewards enquiry on the day of the race made a decision without listening to a recording of the team radio. I appreciate they may not have known about the media interview, but with something as important of this, to not consider evidence that they must know existed, seems incredibly amateurish.

seems incredibly amateurish.

that'll be the ozzies then!!

Hamilton may yet be thrown out the championship (in my opinion he should be) and may get sacked as a result.... a talent tainted and as a result career over no team would be able to touch him....

Jesus, can't we just have a good race?
