Coolant temp sensor issues

Featured Replies

I've finally got round to replacing my old black temp sensor to the upgraded green version. :)

The old sensor seemed to work fine as it always displayed dead on 90 on the temp display.

However i was constantly getting an engine light and fault code of 17704.

So following the advice on Ross Tech i upgraded to the green version.

Now i have a few issues though!

Firstly i am sure i have fitted the green temp correctly, with a new seal and retaining clip. There are no leaks and car seems to run fine.

Problem is the temp display on my dashboard no longer reads dead on 90 which it should do.

I left the car running till warm then took car for a drive for first time with new sensor.

Usually after about 5 mins the guage would go onto 90 and stay there.

So after about 5 mins i looked down to find it was still on 0!

Carried on driving and gradually it went to about 70.

Got home and left it running and the highest it got to was around 80 on the guage.

So the car has only been run for about 20mins on the new sensor, should it of gone to 90 by now or am i not giving the car time to adapt?

Also when i first started the car from cold after fitting the sensor one of the engine fans came on immediatly and stayed on!?

Any advice/thoughts.

Was it a sensor bought off fleabay? I have just had the same issue with one I bought off fleabay, untill I bought a new one from the stealers & its fine.

Hi, yes was one off fleabay.

Are these faulty?

How much was the one from the stealers mate?

Also when you fitted the one from the stealers how long before your temp gauge went to 90?

And what symptoms did you have with the fleabay one?

cheers

I don't know if they are faulty. I got a part number from this forum for the temp sensor & that same part number matched the one I bought off fleabay. So the part number could be wrong off Briskoda or the sensors the seller is selling isn't the correct part number:confused:. I know which I believe:rolleyes: I also noticed there was no markings/part numbers what so ever on the fleabay sensor.

I think the sensor from the stealers was £25.

The temp gauge went up normal after fitting the correct one from the stealers.

With the fleabay one fitted the gauge would never rise above quarter (45 degs) even after a good run & like yours it stayed on 0 for a long time before moving.

Yeah i did think it was abit strange that it had no markings etched onto the gold ring. :thumbdwn:

I'm looking at the old sensor now and it has the vw and audi logos plus the part no. etched onto it.

So i will be going straight to the stealers and ordering a genuine one Tomorrow. This should have all the markings etched on.

Can't believe that someone would sell cheap aftermarket non-genuine ones on fleabay!

No wonder they only cost 10 bucks!!!

Ah well lesson learned i spose :)

I will fit a genuine green one and report back the results to this thread.

Many Thanks for your help.

Glad to have helped:thumbup:

For 10 bucks you probably bought from the same seller as I did:rofl:

Its a lottery buying off fleabay. I've learn't the same lesson:D I know some have bought them from fleabay & have been okay, but I'm not that lucky:rolleyes:

Yep thats the one mate! :thumbdwn:

At least he has'nt advertised them with the word genuine in the description i spose, could of pointed out that they are not genuine parts though!

Checking his feedback he has sold lots of temp sensors yet still has rating of 100%.

So i may leave sensor on for a few days and see what happens.

Will defo be getting a genuine one fitted though. ASAP

I think a coolant temperature sensor from a dealer is only a few quid more - £12.50 seems to spring to mind....

arh, about £2,5 he says having checked the invoice

correcting the price!

Martin, when you told me to get one from fleabay I never saw this one listed:confused: Either that or I should go to specsavers:rofl:

Tbh Oz i didn't know the sods had started selling the after market ones, they hadn't when i bought mine.

How much are these from the dealers?

Cheers thats a very useful thread by the way!

So i would be looking at paying around £25-£30 pounds after vat from a dealer.

I've already wasted £10 on the non genuine fleabay one.

So if i get a GENUINE one from fleabay i've still saved on the price i would of payed the dealers.

I'm off to search fleabay for a GENUINE one rite now!

Once it's arrived and i have it fitted i will report back on this thread.

Probably won't solve my original 17704 fault code though!

*Update*

Fitted Genuine temp sensor and no probs at all.

After around 5 mins temp guage went to bang on 90 and stayed on it.

So if your planning on changing your temp sensor make sure its a GENUINE one!

I have replaced my temp sensor today. But it still sticks between 80 and 90. It didn't reach 90 . Do I need to reset the coolant temp sensor error code using VAG-COM?

Thank you

*Update*

Has been 3wks since i changed the Coolant temp sensor for a new Green OEM one.

Fault code 17704 has gone and not come back yet.

I was constantly getting this fault code come up! :thumbdwn:

So fingers crossed it has solved the problem i was having. :)

dealer part only or your throwing money away £25 squid from vag sorted out loads of my little running issues
