rear window shatterd in a milloion pieces

Featured Replies

was driving to tesco with the kids in toe and the rear window popped outwards into a million pieces for no reason whatsoever..

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

had the window tinted on sunday and he assures me it has nothing to do with the tints....

has anyone heard of this before very strange indeed...will post picks in a minute

I had this on a y reg Mark 1 octavia and the rear windscreen just shattered outwards. they reckon the rear heater element hadn't switched off even though it was off on the button on the dash and the glass just got hotter and hotter until it gave up. At first they said something had been dropped on it but it exploded outwards not inwards...............replaced under warranty

i will have to check this when they fit the new one tomoz

cant believe just had it tinted aswell...:o

thanks for the input:thumbup:

Not sure on tints but dealers put there stickers in the rear screen and somtimes they cover the eliments ..........some times they cover 2 or 3 eliments " could this cause a short circuit "??

Had this happen to a car i had about 6 years ago. I'd done a temporary repair to rear windscreen demister by using chemical metal to bond the heater contact to the element in the windscreen. After leaving it on for about 10 mins then switching off the windscreen blew / shattered into a zillion pieces. The funny thing was I thought someone was shooting at me and I ducked lol. It wasn't until afterwards i realised it was due to my bodged effort.

Windscreens need to be able to expand due to a change in temperature, any hindrance to this will cause it to shatter....

so are tints a no no on the rear then????

Loads of makers fit tints to rear screens with out any problems at all.

Toyota have fitted them to the rear screen on my SR180 as standard and fit them to all SR180's.

Was probably the explosion when they blew the lock off your wallet that caused it.?

There may be a difference between manufacture tint or an after market company tint :)

I've not seen this happen to a car but I was stood chatting to a mates Dad in their yard once and the rear (unheated) screen of a tractor we were stood behind just shattered. Made me a bit twitchy as I wondered if someone was taking pot shots at us! The tractor hadn't even been running as far as I know!

really stumped at why this happend got a new one being fitted and awaiting a call from the tinter to see when he can re do it .....then if it goes again i kno it was the tint and i will give him a size 10 up the arris lol

just glad it didnt come into the car as i had the kids with me..... going to speak to skoda to see what they say as this really shouldn't happen maybe they could shed some light on this...

car wont look right without it tinted or will it lol

Just to continue with the tractor theme....

Was driving down a country lane, and came across a tractor doing tractor speed. Everytime I went to overtake him, he'd bloody swerve over to the right so I couldn't go by. Eventually got by him and I looked in my mirror and he was doing the typical Vs and then his windscreen just shattered as he was doing it. It was perfect karma. :D

Both of my colleagues at work with 55 plate new shape Leons had this happen within months of each other.

No additional tints other than factory fitted sunset glass.

how very strange

for it to blow out like it did it was an epic failure:eek:

Both Leons were parked with no-one in them at the time, which is even stranger!

The back screen of my C Class shattered outwards when it was parked up at work last year.

I assumed it was a stone flicked up by a car turning round in the car park.

Could easily have been a stone hitting it from a passing car in the other direction, or as the kids are holiday you may have been used as target practice for an air rifle, and if the windows were open in the car, then the air would force the glass out of the car.

Also as the HRW wires are in the adhesive that bonds the screen to the car, it may well be that the tinter cut into the adhesive bonding by mistake, caused a short, and the heat built up and caused the screen to go, in a similar way to Andy's car.

Its all supposition at the moment, and I doubt you will ever find the true cause.,

bloomin heck! i bet you jumped out of your skin didnt you?!

has now been replaced

speaking to the guy he said its not un common for this to happen and was just aswell it was tinted as it would have gone all over the kids as toughtend car will shatter into a million pieces it doesnt have a film to keep it formed...he said you can put security film on the windows so it cant be broken but said it means you cant get out in an emergency...lol getting it tinted on sat hopefully:thumbup:

which i was shocked about as it could have hurt the kids...

he says most common prob is sudden change in temp or glass was damaged already and not visible to the eye. he says he has seen thousand just the way the cookie crumbles:O

he was a really nice bloke and was the training manager for auto glass so his work was very percise

as he said you will never know what actually happend:rolleyes:

case closed

Same happend to me on a Rover 25, put it down to poor build quality, but harsh though by the sounds of it.

Good result
