Leaky doors, NEW thoughts?

Featured Replies

Was thinking the other day.

The earlier/ist Fabia's don't seem to suffer from the leaky door issue. I read on here at one point this was because they had the carrier screwed onto the door, and not riveted and this in-turn allowed more pressure to be placed on the original seal which meant it remained water tight.

Soooooo, couldn't the rivits on later Fabia's be replaced with screws? Would this be possible? Becuase then you could get the tightness up on the seal and hopefully put an end to any leaky door issue for good?

Did the door it's self change to allow rivits? What did the screws screw into?

Anyone Any thoughts?

I'd say that by the time you've taken the door card off to replace the rivets with screws you may as well just do the widely accepted fix that's detailed in depth on this forum... :D

Yeah, In-fact I've done that already (the sealant).. it's just that I saw on here it fails quite often and wondered if time spent going from rivet to screw would mean no time re-sealing in the future..

just a thought really, If my seal fails I'll prob look into it if the forum thinks the logic is right ;)

I don't have this problem and mine is a Wreg!

Hence the "The earlier/ist Fabia's don't seem to suffer from the leaky door issue" Lol:rofl:

I've had leaky rear doors on my '01 fabia with the screw on carrier :thumbdwn:

And on my 04 -dealer tech commenta were " 0n riveted ,we seal , on screwed we replace " - either way me thinks we get the rivetted version from the stealers.(oops,no smilie for a dealer sticking large thinhie up customer :rotz:)

Oh, well.. Hmmmmmm, ummmmmmmmm.....

maybe yours screws are loose? ;)

other wise my idea has been proved wrong.

.

I've seen plenty of screwed on ancilliary carriers that leak. The foam material used to form the seal becomes porous, soaks up the water to such an extent that it passes through it and out into the car between the carrier and the interior trim panel.

The window regulators have in my opinion a higher failure rate than you would expect, which means a complete replacement ancilliary carrier.

surely rivets are not the issue, when fitting rivets they get as tight as the can before the metal bit thats pulled on breaks off so i cant see how it would make any difference replacing the rivets with screws.

mines a 55 reg and i've never had the dreaded "leaky doors" (touch wood ;))

My 04-plater has never leaked either. :)

That was the idea of using rivets on the assembley line as a rivet will break off at a pre determined torque so all the fixings would be of equal tightness,

But as Fordfan says the issues is the foam seal on the back which becomes saturated and then goes pourus.

I`ve had the door seals on my Fabia done once and it`s been fine since.
