Just had to take my car into the garage with a bit of a strange noise that I'd noticed in the last week and it turns out i've got a broken coil spring

Now the thing is only last week did it have and pass its MOT and the only thing that needed doing was replacing the one rear tyre. But the day after this I started hearing a the noise.

Could the two things be linked or is it a co-incidence? I.e. could the tyre change have broken the springs?

I might appear to be paranoid but late in february my car kept cutting out on a roundabout and required a fix. After replacing parts to solve this as well as the long standing engine management light and the long stanging coolant warning light problems which ended up costing me £450, i then had an MOT 3 weeks later which cost me £150, and now the same coolant light and engine management lights are on again and with this noise, all of which will apparently cost me £250 inc labour to fix...

Changing a tyre would not cause a coil spring to break.

IMO, the only link between a noise from the suspension and the tyre being changed is that the weight was taken off the suspension parts when the tyre was changed and something may have upset the suspension when the weight was off it. However this would be extremely unusual. I jacked my car up plenty of time and once you've drove about 50 yards the suspension returns to normal.

Is the noise definitely from the same side/place as where you had the tyre done?

If the coil spring is actually broken, regardless of the reason, you should ask the garage how they missed it on the MOT as there is no way they should have missed it first time around unless they didn't do the MOT properly.

I'd stand back from claiming that they passed the car with a broken spring - unless you now think that they are genuine cowboys - which means that you are duty bound to re-submit it for another test elsewhere as it has not been checked over correctly. The more likely reason, I'd think, is that either that spring was ready to go and just "went" or changing a tyre was enough to make a "ready to go" spring break. I had this happen to my wife's Polo a couple of days after getting the ARB replaced - but at the end of the day the car's spring was broken, not uncommon, so needed replacing - end of story!

I've just had the same thing with mine... although the other way around!

A month ago I had three tyres replaced on my Octavia and for a while prior to this I had been hearing this clanging noise coming from the left front of the car. Obviously it had to be a spring. I was assured by a more tech savvy friend that it had probably become unloaded when it had been jacked up or put on a ramp (been in the shop not long before for an indicator repair). So I left it...

I then had the tyres replaced and asked the blokes there and they had a brief look and said it all looked fine to them. I trusted them, cos they are an awesome garage with a very good reputation in the area.

However, every time we hit a small bump in the road it feels like the suspension is made of granite. And the clanging continued...

So today it went in for the MOT and lo and behold, I get a phone call a couple of hours later saying that the long standing indicator problem is now fixed (huzzah!), but they discovered two coil springs had broken! That'll explain it, though I'm a bit miffed that the ultra-trustworthy tyre chaps didn't notice!

To be fair to the garage, I really doubt that changing a tyre would cause the coil to break. However what is strange is my friends 1.4MPi did almost the same thing after he got new tyres a coil spring broke.
