Advanced Warning, Major Roadworks A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel

Featured Replies

Noticed today that they have been erecting specs poles on either side of the Hatfield Tunnel on the A1(M). I found out the reason, major roadworks start in a few weeks and are due to last until 2011.

That and the M25 widening between the A1(M) and the M40 is going to make may daily commute fun for the next 4 years.

4 years :bigshock:

Frigging heck. Right in my working area.

Thanks Manny.

Take it they will be slowing us all down to 50mph again - for 4 years, now that takes the biscut

Unreal! I suffered when they were widening the M1 from Luton. My cruise control will come handy for them 50 restrictions then

Wonder if they learned from the accident during the holmsdale where an accident lead to all vehicle being jammed against the walls

The speed limit through the works is going to be 40mph, 2 lanes in each direction instead of 3. They have just about finished the prep work now. Specs is all installed complete with cameras, looks like they are now building the area where the breakdown trucks park and then the works will begin until 2011.

Also noticed these today aswell, Also the limit around the M11 roadworks has gone down from 50mph to 40mph.

The works now have a confirmed start date.

Went through the tunnel this evening and was greeted with a nice yellow sign,

Work starts here, 4/06/09 for 2 years.

Happy days

Thanks for the warning.

that and all the Galleria traffic will certainly be interesting. Good Luck to all that live and commute down there, glad I don't commute that strech of motorway anymore.

I used to commute into London every day via the Hatfield tunnel. Glad I don't any more.

The work is similar to what they did at Holmesdale not so long ago which includes building a new ventilation building over the carriageway at each end instead of the fans we normally see. They will also install a clever camera system which can identify a broken down vehicle, a person wandering in the road and any debris from vehicles amongst other things.

These works continue in ernst. Over the weekend they have inplemented the main part of the traffic management which will be in place for the next 20 months.

2 lanes in each direction for 20 months, and complete chaos this morning at 06:30am. Same on the way home, miles of traffic.
