"Start off with a 1.0L Corsa like the rest of us did"

Does that include everyone what a generalisation xD

I'm 6ft 8, I can't fit in these Group A or B cars comfortably if at all.

My first car was a Focus TDCi Ghia With The X Pack on it. Turns out it had been clocked! Good Car though didn't let me down apart from the clutch that was insurance group 6 and about £2,300 to insure in a good location, garaged etc.

Not sure on the Fabia VRS though  As soon as they see RS that'll be £88,000! lol I actually had a 190E 2.3 and it was cheap to insure than a Peugeot 306 XSI despite being a Mercedes! quite a bit cheap actually.

My Octavia TDI however that I now own is a rocket ;) I think it's putting out a little more than 110hp, I'll get it dynoed but pretty sure that it has more than the Focus had!

Anyways why don't you just tell him to get a Fabia Comfort or something in black the 1.4 is cheap to insure than the 1.2 then stick a damn badge on it :D It's acceptable for young people to do for insurance reasons but not phats who have bmw 318i's and stick M badges on them!

With my sons 17th bithday just a week away, I thought I'd better get my finger out and get this nightmare expensive insurance fiasco problem sorted pronto.

I think it was somewhere on this thread...may have been another one... that I mentioned about an insurance company that I'd heard about that gives monster discount for restricted hours of useage. No one seemed to know about it however.

Well I've found it, and thought it might come in handy for any 18-21 year olds in here looking for a cheaper alternative.

However, you've got to have a full licence so it's no damned use to my son presently. :rotz:

i-kube: how it works

Comes with a fully installed tracker too!

I believe 'More Than' do a similar shceme too called 'Drive Time', but I'll have to ring them apparently. I'll report back with the results. Tracker included again.

Just found this now too: http://www.coverbox.co.uk/?cb_referrer=MSEA

No driving between 11-5am, i think that's pretty useless if i'm honest.

Unlike most people at 17 I was either leaving at 4.30 heading to golf comps or coming home extremely late. Not all of us are out on the town!

That would cause nothing but hassle for me but I'd be sure you wont need the car between those hours if you're contemplating it, really not worth it IMO.

As you say, not worth diddly squat IF you are contemplating using the car inbetween those 'high risk' hours.

However my son never goes out at night, and therefore this could possibly be the answer for at least the first year.

You can still use the car, however the tracker will notify the insurance company who will then make a phone call to clarify if the car is being used by the policy holder or if it's been nicked.

£45 to use it 'after hours' apparently.

I wouldn't do it purely for hassle or emergency etc. But if he's really desperate to get a vrs at 17 i guess you go to sacrifice somewhere, be it your wallet or the cover.

No, you haven't read the thread properly Jaws.

The vRS idea was buried 4 pages ago. He's got a 1.1 Hyundai Getz now.

Rang this i-kube outfit this morning and they won't insure a provisional licence holder.

They did a quote assuming he'd passed his test with 'pass plus' though.

A 'mere' £2100 including the fitting and hire of the tracker.

Apparently this car insurance grouping isn't worth a carrot. A 1.1 Getz is rated as group 9 in their world!

Quinn insurance come out on Moneysupermarket as top dog...initially at a mere £706. Once he's passed his test though, WOW....a staggering price hike up to £3812, and we're talking TPF&T here too, with ME as the named policy holder, or an eye bleeding £4900 if he's the main name on the policy.

Wonder if he'd like a horse instead, or a carbon fibre hand crafted mountain bike p'raps?

Ah, sorry for not reading.

Insurance is amazing the deviation in prices, quinn get alot of customers with that trick! I searched around for hours on end trying to find mine. Although once he gets to 18 or 19 try bell admiral or elephant as they seem to give me excellent prices at my age (19) but where not so good at 17.

Just my 2 cents!

Blimey I thought £600 was steep on a new astra fully comp when I passed my test, glad I am an old fart now:) When son hits 17 he can have a pair of roller skates ::rofl:

hi guys i am 18 i drive vrs my insurance is £2500 fully comp but i have 1 year ncb because my frist car was a mk3 golf 1.6 that i drove that for one year. :D

Wow, Those are some increadble prices going on there.

As a young driver, That i-kube makes me recoil in disgust. fit a gps system in my car?! lordy thats some scary ****. I wonder if it does crash speed loging or log when it dectects high G forces. Oh god it brings out the inner Civlib nut and reminds me of the kind of nannied kid tat they are starting to do on mobile phones, I would be the first to purchase one of these to have with the unit DealExtreme: $79.56 Super Mini Cigarette Lighter GPS Blocker

Give admiral a try, I had serious luck with them, quinn used to be the one that came up top for every quote, I added 2 named drivers and all of a sudden admiral were 500 quid cheaper.

Good luck with the hunt for the insurance for the anti-youf

I know, and have to admit to losing my rag moderately on the blower yesterday.

The poor girl had to listen to me ranting on about why ...imo...it's no wonder some kids are driving around with no insurance.

I'm not condoning it for one secomd, but some of these insurance companies behave like Piranhas.

Meanwhile, I can look forward to another exciting day of tapping in all the same details over and over again, to various 'quotation on line' insurance companies

Try Quinn again, or over the phone. My friend with a 1.0l Corsa was with them as a learner driver at ~£1k - when he passed he informed them and was told it would cost around £5k instead! He cancelled this policy and started again with the price comparisons and stuff. Strangly though it was Quinn who came out the best (again ~£1k with no NCB and no years experience), so it maybe worth ringing them or something as seemingly their prices can vary depending upon. . . well, who knows what with insurance firms!

*Edit*

Also, Quinn prices seem to vary over time. I got a quote recently (1-2 weeks ago?) for myself and was told around £1,500, just tried again and its now dropped to £1,300 - very odd, espeacilly as I didn't change any details!

That's who I rang yesterday Trigger. I wanted to find out what the policy premium would explode to once he's passed his test. Explode was the operative word, as stated in my quote on your post....£3812 WITH pass +.

The cancellation admin fee once he's passed is £35 which was the other main reason for my phone call to them.

It's looking like we'll be using them until he's passed his test now I think.

Ah ok. My final suggestion would be to try Directline (if you haven't already), as the price stays the same after passing - however, I have had a bad experience with them, but if its someone cheap for the first year you are after. . . .

OR, elephant/Admiral/Bell (same firm) as they could out quote Directline even excluding a years NCB! So it maybe worth trying them as they seem reasonable enough.

Hope you get somewhere with all of this & I share your pain!

Give admiral a try,

GULP!

£3953 as the named driver.

Typed in his mothers car, and they don't come lower insurance rating than that....a Pug 107, group 1, and that reduced it an exceedingly un-cozy £3198.

Well that's saved me yet another long winded phone call, listening to their distorted version of greatest hits from the 60's on a loop tape.

The premium doesn't go up upon test pass ey?

£2495. Still monstrous, but marginally better.

It didn't for me. I assume they haven't changed it, but I don't believe it does. I also found that DirectLine charge more for named drivers.

Out of interest, where does your postcode fall?

CH66 so band C.

Interesting about charging extra for named extra drivers, so I'll knock myself and the missus off and see if the quote comes down. ;)

Normally has the opposite effect.

I'm 19 with 2 years on my licence and 1 years NCB and am paying approx £900 fully comp for my fabia 1.2 with morethan. I looked on their website as I'm looking to get a vRS very soon and they quoted me £876.12 for third party F&T. Try giving them a go and see what happens.

Do what i did i am 17 and could not get insured on a vrs so i got a 1.4 classic and put vrs alloys, vrs front and rear bumper vrs badges on it and am now looking for the vrs seats and it dose look realy good

Mr Ree, are these quotes for fully comp policies or TPFT?

When I started driving (a year after I passed), I insured a Fiat Bravo 1.4 TPFT with business use in my name for ~£750...

Try ecar.co.uk... also adding my parents on increased the policy, so maybe try a quote with just your son.

HTH:)

I think insuring a vRS at the age of 17 is pure madness just my opinion. i would be more worried about my son driving a 130bhp vRS than a 50hp 1.1 Saxo!

Why not get a cheap car for under a grand and run that until 21 (when he gets his first insurance break) it doesnt matter if it gets knocked, vandalised or whatever, then go the vRS route. By then 4 years NCB should have been clocked up and should be no problem to insure a vRS cheaply and of course, 4 years from now vRSs will be alot cheaper to buy.

Top Gear had a point today you know ;)
