Thank God for brembos, curse the mess!

Featured Replies

Mess nearly made in my trousers. Was in Exeter earlier and coming up to a T junction (i was on the straight past main road) and some dozy mare pulls up to the junction, looks left and pulls OUT! I was about 30 metres away and doing 30 mph, when I suddenly realised this car was pulling out in my path, so JUMPED on the brakes hard, steered left and managed to get behind this car which continued to pull out whilst the woman looked at me gormlessly! Car did an amazing job of getting me out of trouble....

The bad thing? Well I'd been at a car boot sale with Mum during the day, getting rid of her stuff, and I'd bought a bucket of 100+ golf balls dirt cheap.... They WERE in the boot area (no back seats) - They ended up scattered all over both rear footwells as the bucket flew into my seat and spilt it's contents.

Just glad the mongrel did such a good job of avoiding serious damage

good old brembo's!

if you'd have been going much faster those golf balls could have done some damage! Glad to hear you're ok!

Golf balls :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Wow! Glad you didn't lose your balls faced with that situation

...

I'm so sorry

Devnut - The link for the lifters in your Sig dont work!

100 Golf balls . . . are you opening your own driving range?

The link should work now, thanks for pointing it out. :)

Golf balls because: A) They were cheap and B) I am not yet good enough to warrant using £1+ per golf ball.... I will use old tatty balls until I am confident of not losing several on a round.

No time to use the horn.... It was a seriously evasive manouvere requiring both hands on the wheel!

Thanks for the all the "balls" puns. They are now safely gathered from my footwells and safely with my golf stuff.

Still a little shaken up to think if I'd been either going a bit faster or not reacted as fast. :thumbdwn: Would have been a serious mess me T-boning that car. It all happened so fast I don't even recall what model car it was - it was yellow and old looking, that's all I can recall!

Know how you feel. I had a woman pull out on me when I was doing 40 (it was a 60 limit but heads into a 40 about 100 metres after) from a t junction. She had plenty time to see me but just didn't look until it was too late.

You're lucky she carried on, in my case she saw me, panicked and stopped blocking the entire lane. I jammed anchors on, wasn't slowing down enough but the oncoming lane was clear so i kinda slid across the road narrowly avoiding her. Was shook up for a while after that after the obligatory haze of swearing!

Glad you got out of it okay (and me)

Thinking back now, I remember that the ABS played a big part.... It kicked in right away, I guess due to the slightly poor surface I was on. I think that's what allowed me to steer behind her whilst I was hard on the brakes. In an older car I don't think I could have done that, mainly due to lack of experience in older motors and the need to pump brakes when you skid with no ABS....

above happened in my astra with no ABS, definitely makes a difference

you sure it wasn't Weibo in drag...:rubchin:

:D

this is exactly what safety devices like ABS and ESP are there for

glad everyone and everything was ok :)

That's what you get when you let women drive...

Nope, this wasn't Wiebo, as even in drag I'm sure he would look right to check even wearing a dress....

Was just about to ask if the abs worked with aftermarket brembos etc. it was probably the abs that saved you as you were able to steer around the other car ...believe me, no abs at that distance and you have to be good to avoid it and not slide straight into it.

And pumping or cadence braking isn't all it's cracked up to be, it helps but wont replace abs .....you can do the same thing by applying the brakes and letting up a little when the wheels lock, that way you are slowing down all the time not in quick bursts, but can anyone think about all that when something like this happens

Although isnt the stopping distance from 30mph 23 metres anyway?

far too many variables to say the stopping distance at x mph is y metres. those official stopping distances probably haven't been updated in the past god knows how many years...

So realistically with improvements in technology it should be a lot less than that?

Glad to hear your ok mate and that your quick reactions saved an accident. Could have been an expensive issue

yes but the stopping distances were also recorded in a straight line on perfect condition new tarmac so corners/camber/dirt play a huge part in it all.

i know she kept going but afterwards did the old biddy at least stop???

if not i hope you did a drive by golfballing!!!

hehe - It wasn't an old woman, actually a young woman but I fear also probably foreign as she had a dark mediterranean type complexion (as well as a startled look in her eyes)

The problem here is I could have been going a little more than 30mph, but only a little - I had just given 2nd gear a good blast off a roundabout and was just shifting to 4th to cruise down a gentle incline when this happened. At worst I was doing 35, but that still doesn't take away the lack of observation that caused it in the first place. From now on, I may drive with an even stronger belief in anyone could do anything, expect the unexpected!

I should also add, that you have to factor in reaction time. I was doing 30(ish), 30 metres to travel. By the time I had clocked the woman was pulling out and jumped on the brakes I had probably travelled 10 metres, so had around 20 at best, possibly 15, on a poor surface to try and react. I wish it had been smooth tarmac as I reckon I could easily have pulled up to a standstill in time. It was quite a scrabbly rough tarmac surface, like a lot of Exeter has.

Yup, looks left, turns left = foreign person

I have to admit I did it myself a few months back in the US (except it was right). I blamed the Hyundai I was driving

This is a nice "accurate" diagram of what happened. Where I am coming down the main road is the point at which I had first jumped on the brakes. The red arrow is my rough path taken whilst the yellow arrow is the way she went.... Afterwards I was so flabbergasted at what happened I just kept going. Kind of a disbelief thing.
