DMF etc

Featured Replies

OK- I ain't a total techie numbskull . Done up an engine or three / rebuilt an engine / repaired a gearbox on an ancient Vauxhall - head gaskets are not a mystery/clutch replacements not a problem/been repairing my own car since first Wolseley 1500 (even did a clutch oN FIL's Reliant Robin (PIG - NO room to work) ----

Reason - took the works Transit in for a service last week - minor probs ,with a bit of noise off the box in 3rd gear - mostly at high revs .No juddering , but phoning in ,told referred to lease co for replacement of DMF/clutch .

So ,unless Ford is trying technofright ---

WTF is a DMF ,AND what is so different .

Bigger gearbox - poss not so big as Vauxhall FD (which had seperate bell housing , which my blacksmith mate used to help me with )- SO WHAT IS MYSTERY -

(Suspect this is one for master tech )

dual mass flywheel.

its filled with springs and magic to make both revving and pulling away smoother.

It's a flywheel made of two parts that can move realive to one another, coupled by springs and dampening bits that smooth out judder and vibration in the driveline. Think of it doing the jame job, but more so, as the springs in a clutch plate.

ok - ta- but some more techie detail would be usefull - (not being sarcy BTW,but I could say a CMOS IC cd4017 ic is a decade counter --)

Have you tried the search?

There's tons of stuff already posted about Dual Mass Flywheels.

works Transit , DMF problems = normal operation ,

very common on those vehicles , the DMFs are basically not up to the job of taking abuse and the sometimes ridiculous loads that people put in Transits

3rd gear noise is also quite a common problem

Ford Transit = rubbish product

i'm just glad i didn't have to work on them after 1999/2000 when the latest ones come out

our transits suffered none of these problems but they were RWD petrols so could well be completely different.
