Canon PowerShot SX10 IS

Featured Replies

Has anyone got personal experience of a SX10 IS ?

I am looking to replace my IXUS 80 and am open to stepping away from the more compact P+S models.

I know that the Pan FZ28 is the kinda benchmark with this type , but would prefer Canon;)

I can get the above model for £200 and this is my rough budget.

Any thoughts would be great:)

Users Speak Out: Canon PowerShot SX10 IS

Not very happy - seemingly. And the dearer CMOS version has worse picture quality.

Thanks for the link.

Know anyone who has one?

thanks for the , er , links :)

I know two photographers who use them, and they're full of praise. We have the S5 at work, I personally own an S3, and they've been great. I've certainly never heard any of the complaints listed on that site from the users I know, and I have yet to see the harsh blue cast one of them speaks of. The autofocus is as good as any in that price bracket, and the way it works varies depending on which mode you've set it to so it's hard to make a blanket statement about its overall ability. It does suffer from noise at very high ISO settings but then what digital camera below high end SLRs doesn't?

Tbh a lot of the complaints seem a bit petty when you realise just how much you're getting for how little cash - my own experiences have been nothing but positive and I think it makes a great everyday workhorse.

IMHO when buying cameras badge snobbery comes into play like it does with cars.

I think a lot of people think of Canons as the BMW/Mercedes of the camera world, and Panasonic as a Skoda.

It's time to put that badge snobbery to bed and accept that Panasonic can make a camera which performs as well as the so called executive marques.

Go for the Z28 ! See my South Lakes post to see what it can do.

BTW - I'm not linked in any way to Panasonic, although by the number of recommendations I've made I wish I was !

I own a SX1is and am very happy with it.

Especially after the first firmware upgrade. The flaws it had at first, hunting AF and not always sharp pictures when the lighting was poor, are gone.

It is very handy, has a superb zoomrange and in my case the Full HD movie option is stunning.

Dont need to carry a moviecam around always having everything at hand.

It isnt too big and the piccies are wonderfull.

At least the way I use the camera.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I am swayed to the Canon mostly due to being able to get one for under 200 , which makes it hard to ignore even over the FZ28.

I think that as a move away from my IXUS80 it will be perfect. I am not sure that not having HD movie capabilities will bother me too much tbh.

I am just off to a couple of shops to have a play.

Thanks again for the posts

For the sake of £20 I know which I'd go for, but each to their own !

I bought my Z28 from them and can recommend them for service they were very

helpfull (Danny in particular), my Dad was going to get the Canon mentioned and

does very thorough research, he didn't buy it in the end, build quality was probably

better than the FZ28 but, as I recall, there is an issue with that Canon with

'purple fringing' which was quite evident on some photos in reviews.

I have been very happy with the Panasonic FZ28 if it's any help:)

One word of warning though, the case that comes in the Sun Digital bundle is

not very good at all, spongy, cheap feeling and unecessarily bulky, I can provide

details and pictures of a very good and inexpensive universal camera bag that

is a perfect fit for the FZ28 to anyone interested, just send a PM:)

Thanks for the post Leeland :)

I have managed to speak to 3 people who have bought SX10's in the past couple of months and none of them have had any issues regarding the blue/purple fringing that seems to be mentioned online.

Still unsure whether to get the Pan instead. ufff , decisions decisions :)

Will go buy one or the other in the next few days instead of just thinking about it though:)

Admittedly the Canon did "feel" better in my hands and just felt better made.

No worries, I'm sure which ever one you buy you'll be happy with, the difference in

quality, at that budget, is almost nothing. I know what it's like though, think about

it too long and there'll be another one coming along to consider:rotz:
