Air Con

Featured Replies

Has anyone else had issues with the air con system?

I have 2008 Roomster Scout 1.6 Tiptronic since Feb 2008.

The system has failed twice and yesterday again I found that it wasn't working.

The dealer put in dye after the first failure and when it failed again I was told they had traced the point where the gas was leaking and it should now be fine.Well its gone again.

The dealership has now closed and I have to travel a fair distance to another. Will they be keen to take on an ongoing warranty problem?????????

If there is an issue then they should sort it. I have had no problem with mine on the 1.9

Where was it leaking from?

I take it the condenser is ok?

No sure where it was coming from. I took it at face value when they said they had found the leak with the help of the dye.It did work ok for about 4 months.

There was no gas in the system both times. The first time they told me the factory had forgotten gas it.

Will be asking a lot more questions when I take it in this time.

Been back to a dealer and they cannot find the leak but no gas in the system again.

Refilled and dye put in again - got to go back in a month to be checked or earlier if I see dye on the garage floor.

System fully checked including condenser and all OK

They suspect a pinhole leak that is allowing a slow release of the gas.

If I might offer a little advice: first and foremost, DON'T lose your temper with the dealer. I know from personal experience it's extremely easy sometimes, but it gives the dealer a brass-bound excuse to start ignoring you. Treating him with courtesy removes that get-out. As for the car being shipped without gas: extremely improbable. To summarize, be polite and persistent, take a loan car whenever possible. And don't give up D-)

A small leak like that can be a bugger to find, it could even be the evaporator which is buried behind the dash, the only indicator would be UV dye dripping from the condensate drain under the car.

You need to have the car in a pitch black garage with a UV lamp to spot tiny leaks like that. not easy and I have sympathy for the techies trying to look for it. Needle in a haystack comes to mind.

If all else fails, a nitrogen pressure test may be in order.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I Dont get angry with the dealer in fact I am very impressed with one I am with now. Explained things very well. Car had been valeted on its return - and I hadn't asked for it.

Have booked me in in a month to check on the progress of the dye.

The angry icon was a mistake - more frustrated.

Air con working fine at the moment.

:) They have found the leak. Gas was escaping from a seam at the top of the condenser.

New unit on order and will be fitted on Friday under warranty.

Can look forward to warm weather again now.

That is good news! But don't hold your breath for warm weather: I've just ordered sunblinds for the conservatory and look what's happened to the weather!!
