Octavia vRS Fuel Consumption

Featured Replies

A while back there was some debate as to the efficiency of my Petrol vRS TFSi

Well on a recent trip of 60 miles i decided to reset both readings on the Maxidot and the trip reset.

The journey was 12 miles of through town not exceeding 40mph (no i wasn't speeding:rolleyes:)and then 45 miles on motorway (Sticking at 80mph on Cruise) followed by 3 miles of round town driving not exceeding 30mph.

For the whole journey i averaged 50mph as shown. I also averaged 41.2mpg. In the past i have had over 45mpg however following a recent members instructions on here on how to recalibrate the Maxidot i now get the readings i have below. I am driving back to folkestone in a week or so and the journey is 250+miles depending on route/traffic so will do another comparison then

Anyway here is the proof that a vRS can be economical.

Please note im not trying to cause a bun fight nor did i buy a vRS for the economy (although it was a deciding factor over other similar type cars) i am just proving that with "normal" driving a vRS on a Stage 2 remap is good on fuel :D:D

I'll say one thing - go get a duster and sort your dash out

My TDI L&K gets about the same MPG, says loads for my driving 'skillz'

Econonomy runs are as boring as ****e aren't they :P

I hoof my vRS TDi everywhere and it wont go below 39mpg. I could get more (got 50mpg on a trip to Scotland) but I get bored easily. :D

Best i ever got was 37.5 mpg on a motorway sitting at about 80mph, other wise its around 31-32 mpg.

Maxidot recalibration? Wazzat then?

mines was the same,

Passat TDi170 can get that anywhere from low 50's on a 50 mile trip to work down the m1 or down to the high 20's if i give it plenty of stick, both of which I think are pretty good, long time average is 37mpg at the minute but thats because its had a lot abuse lately and not many commutes

If I was in the octavia id have been getting low teen's rather than high 20's :)

You really must have a light right foot in normal driving and change up early and just use the torque. Hats off to you. Do you feel the remap aids economy helping you to change up earlier for example?

I really must try harder!!!!

Mind you I do wonder if the estate is less aerodynamic, plus it is a little heavier and ours has 18"s.

Yes the remap does aid the economy.

Before the remap i could get around 37mpg according to the Maxidot (didnt know it could be calibrated back then)

When i got stage 1 done then the economy increased to around 40-42 mpg (again maxidot not calibrated)

It then jumped even further with stage 2 remap to between 43-45 mpg

However i then calibrated the Maxidot hence the reason i now get around 41mpg. I am going back to folkestone next week so will see what i get for a 250+ mile journey.

The 300lb/ft of torque does help massively. I often skip gears due to it. Sometimes i'll go from 2nd to 4th, 3rd to 5th, 4th to 6th.

I can go from 50 - 70mph in around 5 secs in 6th so that is a big help on motorways :D

I honestly don't have a light foot. I accelerate as quickly as poss and just get in as high a gear as needed asap. When on motorways i just sit at around 80mph unless im in the mood to have some fun with some twonk :D

Carl:thumbup:

300lb/ft of Torque - what you save in fuel you probably spend on front tyres ;-)))))

I will wait for the car to be out of warranty before any mods.

I am on a journey to Devon this weekend - but no comparrission as it will be with a Roof Box and full load - mostly A Road too. Be interesting to see what it does! If I get over 330 to the tank I will be happy!

Not really last set of tyres lasted 32k and around 27of that was with 270lb/ft and above.

If you use the power properly you don't shred the tyres. Having the benefit of being trained to drive quickly i know how to use the power;)

Er, I thought doing 80mph was speeding...?

The bracketed comment probably referred to the town driving speed as it was adjacent to this.

Lee

Thats good going for any front driver let alone with that much torque.

Out of interest were they Dunlop Sport Maxx's or the Continentals (we have the former and they seem a very hard compound).

I find the car hard to get off the line cleanly and spoke to a VAG specialist and he felt Skoda had set up the clutch and DMF differently to the rest of the group.

Correct but as an indicated 80mph = 75mph then no it isn't as you have to be doing 79mph to be classed as speeding (APCO guidelines is 10% + 2mph) and as Lee said i was referring to the 40mph bit through the town hence i put the quote adjacent to that part of the sentence

Please learn the structure of the English language :P:D

Neither :D

They were Michelin Pilot Primacy II. Good for longevity but absolute sh*te for grip in anything other than bone dry, flat, pristine tarmac roads.

I'm currently using Vredestein Ultrac sessantas & Avon ZZ3's done 4k on Ultrac's and now put ZZ3 on front and there isn't much in it between the 2 at the moment IMHO

As for getting away cleanly its nowt to do with the clutch & DMF more to do with feeding the power in rather than just flooring it and hanging on for dear life :D

Carl:thumbup:

Interesting combination on the tyres - must make nice wet patterns!

The Ultracs is a tyre I am considerring when we wear ours out. Those or T1R's - loved them on other cars. Interesting they have not impacted on economy - sticky performance tyre v's standard harder compound Michelin.

The problem I have getting off the line is the bite point I feel is les "mechanical" than other cars I have driven - I thought it was me but this guy owns several VAG products and has a similar problem in his wifes Skoda. Basically it is easy to bog down, or flare revs and not get cleanly off the line. I have not tried a Subaru 4000 revs and drop the clutch yet - and mechanical sympathy stops me! I should add the car was not bought from him nor does he have any vested interest!

Oh and I know why you get better economy than me - its the super shiny auto glymed car!!

(Actually I use many of the same products (not Super Resin or the finishing product). Ultra deep Shine and meguires wax to finish for me - its a pain if it gets on anything black though!)

G'day everyone

I have had my RS wagon for about 3 weeks now. Australia is an appalling nanny state re speed limits - we are now driving so slowly that they are thinking of reintroducing the person walking in front with a flag to solve the unemployment problem. :D

Most of the time I drive at a solid pace for the conditions but use the brilliant torque of the 2.0 TFSI to extract both performance and economy.

On 98 RON fuel, my worst average was 13.6 l/100kms(20.8 mpg) fanging it through the mountains - huge fun! Best so far was 7.7l/100kms (36.7 mpg) for a gentle 600 km freeway trip at 110-120km/h and I get 9.7 l/100km (29.2 mpg) around town. Last week I did a trip to the coast - driving through hills and around the beach towns and averaged 9.5 l/100kms. These are corrected figures, but Maxidot is close.

I am happy with these figures, particularly given the performance on tap and the use I make of it.

In Australia, the standard petrol is 91RON(currently $1.17 p/l today), Premium is 95RON (about $1.26 p/l) and 98 RON (about $1.29) is avaiable less widely. RS here is set for 98 but will accept 95, so you have to add about 10% to the cost compared to most Japanese, Korean or Australian cars, which are tuned for 91.

Hope this is interesting. Have people found there is an improvement or detoriation in everyday figures when they have a Stage 1 chip?

Next step is an ICE upgrade - have MFD2 which is reasonably good sound for standard gear but will be adding a set of good splits in front (MB Quart, Boston Acoustics or similar), an amp (have a spare new Pioneer, 150wRMS bridged) with a sub (10" Infinity in sealed box) and decent crossover setup. May add a quality amp for splits too.

I am really enjoying this car and keeping finding new features - I am amazed at the value for money.

Cheers

I found a big improvement in economy when I had the remap done but I suppose it will depend on the software and also if you use the power to it's full potential. Don't get me wrong if I floor the car then it uses more fuel than normal but as I said earlier if you use the power properly then you can still make very good progress very quickly and not have too great an impact on economy :)

Carl

Just had a trip from near Dover to Scotland (Kinross-ish) and back. See pic of filthy car

207rkoi.jpg

Going up (A1M, etc) was 480 miles, took nine hours (8 driving, 1 stationary per the sat nav) at an average of about 60mph - generally sat at 80 where possible. MPG indicated was 35.5 and a recent trip to Liverpool and back showed that to be within 0.1 mpg accuracy. Not checked it since but will next time.

Coming back (M6 etc) more like 520 miles, done in 7 hours 40 minutes driving time (average closer to 70) and got 36mpg indicated.

Also 'used' a litre of oil - as in it was halfway down the minimum bit of the stick before setting off so topped it up. First time i have checked it in the nearly 10k miles i have had the car (:o) so will keep better tabs on it from now on.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think I may just have needed to adapt to the car I have just driven 521 miles using 76 litres of petrol for 31.12.

Not so Impressive until you realise

1)It had a huge full Roof box

2) It was fully laden with fishing tackle

3) First 35 miles were driving out of London

4) last 20 Miles were driving into London

5) 16 very short journeys of around 1.5 miles

On Motorway stuck to 70 on cruise unless overtaking - I hate crawling past a person travelling at 60 or 65). Any faster and you could really hear the resitance pick up

On way there A31/A303/M5/A30/A3086

On way back A3086/A30/M5/M4/A4 (dropping off)

So with allowances for load and roof box - thats pretty good and probably nearer 37 if it was a normal load. I definitely see a drop in economy over 70 (indicated). 75 or 80 saw the trip dropping its MPG whereas 70 showed it rising.

Mmmm......

Everyone else with TFSi seems to get significantly better mpg figures than me. I drive 16 miles each way to work, a little of which is on the ring roads and roundabouts of Basingstoke, but the rest is fast sweeping A road, and I struggle to make 30mpg.

Am I just driving like a loon, or is there something wrong with the car?

I did manage 40mpg the other day from Leicester to Rutland Water, but I had the in-laws in the car and so I was driving like Miss Daisy.

Usually on Miss Daisy mode @ 60-70 I get 40-42mpg. Urban can be anywhere between 15-30mpg, depending on length of trips. I know the maxi can be a bit optimistic.

I always reset to get more acurate figures (departure to motorway - reset - motorway to motorway end - reset - motorway end to destination. I like to know my average for each leg.

Takes a bit of time and miles to bring the average back up. If I did a 10 miles trip I'd be lucky to get over 30. At 35 miles I can get it to 35mpg and at about 100 miles up to 40mpg. That would be driving around the NSL with few hold ups.
