Is it me or is Esso diesel rubbish!

Featured Replies

Never really used Esso fuels for many years - tend to stick with BP or Morrisons as they are local to me. But had to get fuel sharpish (computer was saying no miles left for er, 5-6 miles :P) and got a whole tank of standard esso. God the car feels rough and lumpy :thumbdwn:

Anone else notice such big variations in fuel quality - I can't believe it varies enough to make a modern engine run differently?!

Esso are owned by ExxonMobil. I use to work for them two years back and use to get free fuel. Still - I always regarded the fuel as superb quality! I worked in a very "up market" area with alot of top marques motors and regular customers swearing by their local esso!

Saying that, we were talking about Super Unleaded and not Diesel and maybe times have changed . . . I dont know. Always thought they were decent fuels myself!

i was wondering if ESSO still had stations, there are none anywhere near here.

To be honest, I experienced this myself the other week after filling up with Morrisons diesel. The car was running terribly, felt less responsive and I only clocked up 320~ miles before my fuel light popped on, and thats just normal every day driving.

I was discussing this with a mate who seems to believe Morrisons must mix in a percentage of biodiesel. Apparently, it's down on power and you get less MPG, but I'm no expert in the matter.

All I know is, I'll stick to Tesco diesel. Fill up there every time, and the car feels perfect. But this is where someone comes along and says, "Ugh, Tesco fuel? Awful stuff.." :D

I only use esso diesel if it is the only thing near by ie if I'm in a place I don't know or on holiday, last time I used esso was in Milngarvie in glasgow and never noticed much diffrence, I tend to use either Morrisons or Shell and occassional Asda.

I've found most of Esso's fuels to be a bit below par to be honest...

Tend to try and avoid, which is saying something as there's an Esso just round the corner from me!.. Which is also a Tesco!

Of course, all these "this fuel is better than that fuel" threads are a bit subjective anyway unless you've run each fuel for 4 or 5 tanks consistently so the computer can adjust.

I've found BP's Ultimate Diesel to be better than Shells V-Power Diesel.. just a little smoother in mine, but then.. each engine is a little different. :) When I was running a Petrol furby it was the other way around, found Shell to have a little edge over BP.

Most Esso fuel is better than the others, so to speak but there is a hell of a difference between Esso and Shell and until I find different I will always try to put Shell in my car

Shell all the way.....

I very rarely use esso, only when there isnt a shell near by or my local one is closed and only put £5/£10 in untill I can fill up at shell

Personally I stay away from supermarket fuel

I've used Tesco, Total, Texaco, BP, Shell, Jet and possibly ALDI or Morrisons diesel in the Ibiza - basically whatever's been closest or quietest when I've wanted/needed to get fuel. It's not like I've been scientific about it, but I can't say I've noticed a big difference in performance, economy or even smoke - certainly nothing to make me prefer/avoid any of them.

I'm another one who actively avoids supermarket fuel, but I'll have whichever brand name's cheapest. Recently I've had BP, Texaco, Total, Shell [cos that was 3p/l cheaper than Esso] and BP again (2 weeks hols, with several 200 to 250ish mile stages that I filled up before every one of, and again near the end of the last one).

Shell only for me, ever !

and as for supermarket fuel, after seeing nearly every ramp in our workshop with a car on one day with a case of 'bad fuel' i wont ever touch the stuff, you should have seen the colour of the fuel the lads drained off, and 3 of the cars were no more than 18 months old !

Whatever is cheapest for me, don't give a stuff where its from as long as its a garage.

Wherever is cheapest for me.

I always use whatever is convenient and not too expensive. That typically is Tesco or Texaco, but not always. It did notice an MPG drop on some Total fuel last year, but generally is all seems the same to me.

I've just filled the Furbie Vrs up with BP ultimate 117.9 per litre........seems to run better but know doubt you will all say......" Waste of Money "...........:o

Batches vary .... and sometimes you get water in there as well

Any heavy rain in your area lately ?

I run my car on whatever is cheapest near where I need fuel. Currently running on Sainsburys City Diesel, but its usually running on Esso or Asda. Previous tank full was courtesy of E. Leclerc hypermarket in Dieppe.

Cant say I have ever had an issue with Esso, car seems to run fine and returns more than 550 miles on a tank of Esso. Tend to avoid Shell and BP because there are not that many Shell/BP garages on my commute and those that are mean a detour. Sainsburys and Esso are right on my route.

If it's running rough, add a splash of 2-Stroke oil to the tank.

working at an oil refinery i must admit.. its all the same stuff.

petrol is petrol

diesel is diesel

(eg.. TOTAL Excellium is the same as SHELL ULTRA or what ever..)

sometimes when we can't make enough petrol (TOTAL) we buy the good quality petrol from SHELL and add crap to it to make it 95 from 97 or what ever it is.:rofl:

we deliver to every petrol station near by wether its SHELL BP TOTAL SAINSBURYS etc..

so i think if your car performance is down it's due to the tanks/storage of the station.. i.e. nearer empty picking up the ****??

I'm sticking with any old ****e and a splash of Millers every 2 months and a Forte treatment every 12 .

If it's running rough, add a splash of 2-Stroke oil to the tank.

There was a thread about this but I can't find it now. Anyone know what ratio to use as I would like to give it a try?

Try Shell v-Power next.. let me know what you think as I'm sure the BP soup seems slightly more intune.. does in my lump anyways :)

i use sains fuel, bp fuel anyways from there see the bp tankers in the 1 near me
