VRS specific questions, inc towbars!!!

Featured Replies

Hi, Im looking at possibly getting a VRS and went to look at one tonight at a localish garage. Its a 2002 but has 42kmiles and FSH (albeit not all Skoda) It also has cruise, rear parking sensors, sunroof etc.

I took it for a run and TBH it didnt feel that fast and the gear lever was very stiff. I think it may have been sitting for a while as the actaul gearbox was ok. Brakes were not the best either but thats an easy fix for me.

Now the questions. There are only a few for sale up here (Scotland) and this has low mileage, no real issues and I got him to £4.2k with belt change. Is that decent? I recon that I can do the belt myself later on so I'll see if he will take £4k as it is. (Full MOT & tax inc and a service)

I take it the belt is the usual 60kmiles as I was looking at the serice book and it said 60k km?

3rdly I need to get a towbar fitted. Ive seen the kits but will the parking sensors cause problems and has anyone fitted one to a VRS themselves?

that price sounds a bit expensive to me,i would be offering him £3750max,the cambelt should of been replaced in 2006 as its 4 years or 60k,the brakes should be very good,my 04 octy vrs has the best brakes ive ever had on a car,on yours its maybe due to the car been stood,i would check closely for corroded brake discs, the gear lever should not be stiff,i would guess it needs the linkage/cables checking & lubricating,if you change the cambelt yourself change the water pump & tensioners & damper too! if its a very nice car i wouldnt be to bothered about paying good money for it but you need any work req taken off the asking price, hope this is of use to you,i brought my octy a year ago & its a great car!

Morning!

I have a towbar fitted to my vRS, dont have parking sensors though. :o

Over 4K seems a little expensive for a 2002 car but if there is proof of low mileage then I guess it could be worth it. What is the condition like? Any ware on the seats, carpet, gear leaver gater, mats or steering wheel? Good tyres?

If your paying top money for the car you want to make sure your not going to be shelling out any time soon.

I'd pay the extra to have the cam belt done but if you are confident you can do it yourself then why not save a few quid.

As for it feeling a little slow; this could because its been sitting a while, depends how long. Could be stale fuel.

I have also seen some 1.8T's (Passat not vRS) with the K03 turbo having turbo problems when they never get driven enthusiastically, my brother bought a Passat sport off a lady (one owner) with this problem it was so slow (even for a passat, lol), as if there was no turbo. I seem to remember it being something to do with the wastgate valve.

Thanks. There is evidence to back the mileage up. To me the acutal year it was produced means nothing as, I believe, they didnt change anything on the Mk1 from start to finish so if you look at the late cars they are exactly the same as the first cars.

Regards the price its a dealer so they will always be slighty more (asking £4.5k) and as I said there are probably about 5 for sale in the whole of Scotland at the moment, most about 100kmiles and only a grand or so cheaper. By the time I go down south the money saved on one cheaper it pretty much eaten up with getting there and back plus you cannot really check before going. This car is in good nick, with no real marks, it needs rear brakes but I can do that easily myself.

I did forget about the 4yr thing for the cambelt. It has definitely not been done. Only thing is the guy does sell nice cars but Im not too confident on them doing something like the cambelt, a filter service maybe.

Im selling my Golf Tdi for this and on the drive home I did wonder why as it does almost everything I need plus getting stuck behind a dawdling driver it was doing 75mpg!!!

Ive also a localish guy interested in a p/x for my Golf with esseintally the same car as the dealer but 50kmiles more.

I am looking at other cars but the big boot attracts me to the Octavia. Ive had remapped S3's and a Leon Cupra R so I was maybe expecting a little more from the engine. I did think fuel etc might be the cause.

You say you've got a Golf TDi atm; which tune, because the 110 has as much torque as a 1.8T 180, and the 130 has more, plus the Golf is over 100kg lighter.

110tdi. Initial take off didnt feel that much different so your right. I just get frustrated driving the Golf due to lack of power. Going to look at a Passat estate as well.

Out of curiosity, is this car in edinburgh? I saw a black 2002 vRS that was going for £4.2k in edinburgh about 6 weeks back and it drove really badly.

A remap on that should give you about 140bhp, and 240lbft. Unless you're doing track days or regularly running over a ton (don't say if you are) I don't see a vRS being much faster.

towbars are easy to fit on vrs, ! hr should do it, i took mine off in 30 mins! and if you have the proper loom it just plugs on to backlights in the boot- so no scotchlock! i would have tought this would be too low to bother rear sensors.

Ive looked at that, its the early version so its ECU out and chip desolder. I race bikes so I use the car to two my trailer and put all my stuff in it so an estate makes more sense I think. Dont get me wrong the Golfs a great everyday car but I dont really like diesels.

See, to me a requirement like that yells "Octy TDi estate"!

Sounds like a vRS isn't the car for you really. Towing all that gear would be better with the car Mr ONeill suggested. As for the car not being fast - I agree. On my first test drive I was slightly underwhelmed as I was trading in a S14 200sx. However, the vRS is a deceptively capable car if driven properly, but I could never say in standard form that it is fast. After my remap though, it is much better.

A guy I know is selling a 1.8T estate with remap and towbar plus a few other things so Im going for that. VRS was just not the car after all.

Sold my '54 plate vRS before Christmas for £4250, was immaculate, full Skoda SH, with a new cambelt and water pump, 57k on the clock, taxed and MOT'd.

And it had a removable tow bar :)
