Kangarooing DSG

Featured Replies

Does any one find there dsg box some times kangaroos setting off from a standstill? more so if you try to get away quickly but not flat out

Its doesnt try and put your face through the windscreen but its certainly noticeable to passengers and quite embarrassing, a friend of mine who is learning to drive thought it was excellent that id made the car kangaroo till i explained it wasnt possible as i dont have a clutch pedal

Yes.

Yes.

Don't beat about the bush - give us a straight answer please

Not noticed it with mine yet, although I do notice sometimes it can 'lurch' a bit when going down the lower gears pulling up at junctions

Clutch slipping, maybe? Possibly after prolonged stop&go driving?

When you say kangeroo, do you mean if you keep your foot flat to the floor and speed up to 30/40/50/60 etc, or if you speed up then take your foot off the gas then on again? Mine is smooth is going from 0-60 etc, put in traffic my DSG can be a bit lurchy if I accelerate, then take my foot off the gas then reapply the gas - gearbox doesn't know if it should be up or down then I get the lurch, which as you say for an "auto" isn't what you would expect.

I thought I did. :)

Mine can be quite 'lurchy' when pulling away and coming to a halt. Generally though it is very good.

Can't say I've noticed it except on the downhill which is steep and the box gets all in a lather as to which gear it should be in. Mind you, it's nowhere near as bad as the Vauxhall Easytronic thing which is far too easy to confuse.

its when i set off and back off a little bit, about 10mph mainly, lurches back and forth and doesnt get any faster

Mine does do that - I now flick it across to manual at the top of the hill until it's levelled out, then back to 'auto'

Dan - if you drive slowly say around a car park keeping the revs steady does it kangaroo i.e it feels as though you are lifting off the power even though you aren't? If so the mechatronic unit may need replacing. There should be no jerkiness on take off.

For others with the downhill problem if the car is running away put it into S so the box locks in a lower gear. I do this on dowhill 30 limits as it drops to 3rd and keeps at 30.

Hi everyone, first post here but have been following stuff closely. This is my first automatic car of any sort,I chose the DSG transmission but I think I am beginning to regret it. When in D and with foot off gas it creeps forward in a series of little 'bunny hops' -applyin a little gas and it progresses normally. Also I find that in situations where fine control is required eg when creeping out of a junction with poor sight lines it is almost impossible to 'balance'the car like a manual on the clutch.

I drove a manual 1.9Tdi today at the dealers and felt more in control not to mention a altogether smoother ride. Beginning to regret buying the DSG box already but could it be faulty or is that how they all are?

My DSG will kangaroo slightly, if you catch it wrong. You release the brake, there's a very slight creep, then the clutch engages more, and the car moves more, so you brake. It then releases the clutch. If you let this continue it becomes a cycle. The trick is to be smooth and very gentle releasing the brakes if you are trying to move slowly.

I personally love the DSG, but it does take a bit of adjustment, driving wise, even compared to another (semi)-auto,

Strange - I find the creep quite useful for edging forward in most situations. It's also useful on gentle slopes.

I did have a recent experience pulling out of a side road on a steeper slope when I had my first taste of rollback.

if its the mechatronics will it show up on the car park test every time or intermittently ?

thanks

I presume all these posts refers to the 6 speed "wet" DSG?

What happens if you right/left foot it. i.e. left foot gently on brake and right foot gently on accelerator - does the DSG just disengage or does it try to drag the car as would a conventional auto?

Dan it will do it all the time. Normal take off will also be very jerky.

When you slow down approaching a junction I figure DSG preselects the next gear and as you have your foot off the gas it doesn't know which one so it assumes you'll slow to a stop gently. If you then floor it away, the box is confused and has to select the "wrong" gear quickly, hence a thump. My 54 1.9 didn't ever do this in 100k, but the 08 2.0 has done it since new.

I only ever experience this after slowing down with my foot off the gas,at lower speeds, then booting it like at a roundabout - if I'm really gentle then there's no problem.

yes i can make it do that but it isnt the problem im talking about, it kangaroo's backwards and forwards multiple times, failed the car park test so im not sure now

Dan - you have a message.
