Torque rules

Featured Replies

Had a little play tonight with (someone I know I must add, in safe conditions) a UK spec Honda Integra Type R - totally stock. Up Telegraph Hill (A380 Torquay where duallie splits for Plymouth/Torbay) and both us hammered up this long 1 in 8 / 1 in 10 hill from about 70mph - I say both as I hammered up in 4th & 5th up to ahem. fast :o, and considering he started in front of me, he did not and I was able to scoot on past him comfortably.

He later admitted that my 370lb/ft probably helped over his 140 odd lb/ft - vtec or no vtec....

I will gladly admit however I had to scrub a lot of speed off at the quite sharp right hander at the top of the hill, whereas the good old ITR simply went round at the same speed....

Tut,... slow down for the bend? You not got Cupra bushes then ;)

Gotta admit, my vRS is stock but I love the surge of torque... yours must be mental! :D

Cupra or bushes or not, there was no way my fabia was going around it at 120.... (km/h ;))

Not on it's wheels anyways.. ;)

It is a shame the Fabia can't get round corners at higher speeds, it's be a power to be rekoned with if that were the case! :)

I could have managed 100 (km/h...) I think, but I scrubbed off to 80 (km/h...). The ITR went around happily at it's 100 (km/h...) it achieved up the hill. Was good to watch it go round - steady as a rock!

Same here sortov.... had a local civic with a integra type r engine... old one i think... up a very sharp hill from 50mph+ to silly figures and it was neck and neck whereas on the flat it left me for dead :D

This one was 12 years old I think. Was on a T plate anyway. The ITR deserves ultimate respect for it's "out the box" performance but as he said, the dervs can be tuned hard with little or no engine impact, whereas the ITR cannot be pushed much further than they come as stock.

Same engine then... :D!! its the same with eveything tho... you can supercharge a vtec if you like .... theres a lad local to me who's running the most powerful civic type r in the uk... believe its 600bhp plus through the front wheels

that was before the latest mods lol...

Wasn't that civic in the Redline mag last year on the track day against the Porsche, Audi's and other various cars?

My mate was running the White Civic 1.6VTEC Turbo in the mag.

Oh how I love Telegraph Hill. I drive that road to and from Exeter Airport pretty much every day and its a true test of torque up there! Why couldnt thay have made that top corner banked though? It would be so much safer. I came round that corner a few weeks back and there was an old woman doing 30 in the overtaking lane  brown pants moment for sure.

Interesting comparison though, as my totally standard mapped vRS will sit between 95-100 (kmph of course ) going up there, thats accelerating from 70 (kmph ) just where the roads split. 80 (kmph) is as much as I would go round that bend, its just too unpredictable.

Si

My P-Torqued VRS will keep with a Mini Cooper S convertable up to 60mph in a straight line, then pull away.

So 180bhp and f*ck all torque against 230bhp (ish?) and 400lbs/ft of torque... yeah... fair...

Know Telegraph Hill.

Its a B*st*rd and a favourite for homebound commuters with big diesels - the game being who can get to the top without dropping a cog.

Would take my meagre 100Hp petrol saloon down from 70ish and 5th to 35 and 3rd in a couple of hundred yards.

Without wishing to incite, you've done the uppy bit. How about trying the goee downee bit on the opposite carriageway, where the 380 joins the Northbound M5. Lovely sweeping downward slope, left and then well right and then left again. I've overtaken a Manaro going down there - mind you he was only toottaling.

I ride my downhill mountain bike in those woods just in behind that nasty top corner, and the amount of screeching of tyres you actually hear is comical. Also nice to hear some powerful stuff coming up the hill!

I live and work about 3 or 4 miles away from Shelsley Walsh - if anyone were to attend I would expect to be notified ;)

I once was racing my shadow whilst in my car, but as the day went on, it creeped infront and beat me :(

The ITR was 200hp dead apparently on last rollers but it doesn't take anything away from the fact mine is more powerful on both sides. Mine is still a lardy derv and an ITR is a very good performance car. If it was so clear cut i wouldn't have bothered mentioning it. :) Kind of why I braked for the corner and he didn't. [Mark and Lard] No need!
