tyres on 17"s

Featured Replies

Hey peeps I no this topics probably come up before but can't find it using the search got my octavia spiders yesterday but the tyres rub thought there were 2 big the have 225 45's on wat is the best size to get?

205 will prob have a bit of a stretch on them but 215's seem to be about right!

205/40/17 are the ideal size. You can go 215 width but it upsets the handling slightly.

I think we should have sticky with the correct tyres for each size rims and the correct pressures for them?

Out of interest - how do wider tyres upset the handling?

205/40/17.

I think it's because they tram line more..................Maybe

Cheers. I just wondered as I am running 215/40/16 on mine and have not really noticed any difference. I got them because they worked out £50 a set cheaper.

I've just fitted a set of 17" octavia vRS wheels with 215/40/17 tyres. I decided to go for the 215 to provide better side wall and rim support. however it does feel a little different on the road.

Looking at doing the same myself..... Curreently using original 16" Fabia vRS wheels.

I would imagine the ride would be a little firmer at least?

You might induce any or all of tramlining, true bumpsteer, torque steer and more aquaplaning, depending on tyre size, geometry and whether there's a change in offset.

How would changing the width of a tyre cause bumpsteer?

I'm putting 45 profiles on my 17's soon. Should i see any problems? Cars lowered slightly

You may get some rubbage. I have 215/40/17's on my VRS with Eibachs on it and i've had no rubbing or anything.

How would changing the width of a tyre cause bumpsteer?

It shouldn't, if you retain the same proportional offset in the wheels. Most people keep the same offset measurement though, so moving the tyre inwards in proportional terms.

Wider rim and narrow tyre, = more rigid support for the tyre.

205/40/17 are ideal but 215/40/17 are OK and change the handling a bit but you would be hard pressed to notice the difference unless you are a keen trackday goer.
