Nasty whining noise from rear brakes when reversing

Featured Replies

Hi All,

A search hasn't thrown up the answer but I apologise if this has been asked before. My 2003 Octy 1 vRS has developed a hideous din when I reverse it, it seems to be coming from the rear brakes and is getting worse - can only describe it as the same noise as running your finger round the rim of a wine glass but louder. The dealer has stripped and cleaned up the brakes but that has been ineffective, they also told me this is a common problem on cars with bigger alloys where water can get into the brakes more easily..apparently not just skoda's but some VW's do this as well?

my question is has anyone experienced this before and more importantly any ideas for solving it, its doing my head in!

Thanks in advance :)

Does it sound like a "mooing" or "gronking" noise (great descriptions I know :o)?

Try a search for "vrs brake mooing".

This was a known problem with the vRS and it can be solved by replacing the rear pads with chamfered-edged pads.

yes, could easily be described as mooing!

thanks for the hint, will have a search for that

Moooo

And the dealer claims to never have heard of this before!!

Come on, there are tribes in the Amazon who've never seen a "civilised" human that have heard of Octy vRS mooing!

And the dealer claims to never have heard of this before!!

I was annoyed that my local dealers wouldn't fix it free of charge under warranty. They said it was a "known fault" but would only replace the pads with chamfered ones as and when they needed replacing, at my expense

Have been living with the mooing for over a year now!

hmmmm, the dealer claimed to know nothing of the new pads that suk have released (as mentioned on other threads that i was directed too). the car is under the 1 yr used car warantee and they replaced front discs/pads for free to stop a judder through the steering wheel/pedal so hopefully I won't be having an arguement tomorrow to get the rears done.... :worried:

Let us know how you get on

Yeah mine is mooing too! it's quite annoying but i have lived with it for about a year now!

Changed my rear discs and pads (chamfered) in March this year, Moo'ed like mad with every little bit of reversing.

Now its a lot less only a slight Moo on occasion, I guess they are bedding in, (ive done about a thousand miles since then).

Good Luck

well garage just called, they have stripped, cleaned and readjusted the brakes and claim the road test shows no noise, which is exactly what they did last time so i am dubious.... :rotz: ... at least they've done the work for free!

Thanks to all for advice, if it doesn't work i'll be buying those chamfered pads direct from suk and getting them on the car, at least i know what to search for now! Mooooo!

Hi,

I have had a similar problem when reversing and after replacing rear arm trailing bushes the problem disappeared.

I hope it helps
