Bulb out warning but no bulbs out! Any ideas?

Featured Replies

I've had a bulb off warning flash up on the dash for a few days now, thats a bit intermittent, seems to go off just after touching the brake pedal and comes back on a few minutes later...

So, I've checked all the bulbs, all working, bulbs are in the clusters properly and it's still doing it...

So, I've changed both the brake bulbs today, both the tail bulbs today, all 4 indicator bulbs were changed late last year!

But, it's still flashing up (not as regular mind you  ) and the tone is getting right on me t!ts...

Anyone got any ideas BEFORE I have to go to the dealers?

If not a bad earth, likely to be voltage control unit that measures the resistance of the bulb circuits.

Have you changed a bulb recently, I had a similar thing with a another car i owned and it turned out to be a dodgy bulb. The bulb worked fine but for some strange reason it kept setting off the warning light.

Make sure all connections are clean and bright. As Moggytech hints at, these things work by measuring voltage drop across the bulbs. If it's too high, they think the bulb has failed.

Well, last week I had the timing belt, etc done at the local VW dealer so asked him if he'd check out the problem and hopefully cure it...

The technician said there was no fault registering , all bulbs were fine, however, he changed the rear indicator bulbs (silvatecs I fitted late last year) and, fingers crossed, seems to have done the trick...

Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy the pain in the ar5e problem has gone but those standard bulbs are not exactly the pleasing on the eye are they?

To sum up I'm just a bit miffed with the Silvatecs as they're not cheap compared to standard bulbs, anyone else had any issues with them? Now I'm unsure wether I should try a different brand or stick with the orange ones?

The brake light switch was changed on saturday and seemed to have done the trick...

However, yesterday it started again!

The garage also changed both tail bulbs (again) and the front sidelights bulbs as they "looked a bit iffy" and took it out on a road test and said it was fine now!

So, it's going back to the Skoda garage where I bought it and staying there until it's sorted out!

Just out of curiosity, anyone know if the bulb off warning function can be turned off via Vagcom? (last resort)

Had similar problem. Turned out that the high-level LED brake light was the culprit.

Since then the warning has appeared twice. On both occasions it was the nearside brake light which had failed.

Hmmm

Mine is coming on intermittently too and I can't work out why. When it does the n/s rear brake light is off (although the bulb is fine cos it comes back on again). The brake bulb is fixed in properly. There doesn't appear to be any loose connections. I'm beginning to wonder if it's a problem with the brake pedal switch mechanism??

Anyone out there know??

Hid's can set off the light out bulb.

Also had a similar problem last year. Pushing in a black relay under the dash (it clicked in to place as I pushed it) sorted it for me.

Mine did this for a while in winter due to the brake light bulbs so I changed them for some decent ones and it's been fine ever since
