Audi to revamp A4 in January

Audi is preparing to launch a pre-emptive strike against next year's new BMW 3-series by launching a heavily revised A4 saloon and Avant estate in January. The changes affect all versions, including the high-performance S4.

The basic body structure is unchanged save for some reworking of the crash structures, but every external panel apart from the roof is new. The A4 now gets the large one-piece grille from other recent Audis.

The engine range has also been trimmed from 11 to 10, and includes four new units. This has necessitated new manual, automatic and continuously variable (CVT) auto gearboxes. There have also been chassis changes as Audi chases a more sporting image...
