fabia vrs or civic type r?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of changing my Fabia vRS for a EP3, and decided not too. The Fabia looks so much nicer.

Yea the CTR is quicker in every way, but running costs, tax, insurance, the rediculous service prices, and the fact that you need to change the oil like every 3,000 miles. Plus as stated before, you do attract a lot of attention from the rozzers.

Buy a Fabia...remap...Happy Days!!!!

I too have owner both and as suggested earlier it really depends what you can afford and what you use the car for!

If you absolutely love B road blasts, only need 4 seats, can afford the higher running costs (Tax, Insurance, petrol and continual topping up of Fully Synth oil) then I would say go for the Type-R without hesitation - its a fantastic driving machine, the handling, gearbox and VTEC engine are an absolute hoot!

In response to the above post I dont believe service costs were any higher than any other manufacturer I have dealt with. Parts and modifiction items are readily available for the EP3 and there are Specialists/Independents that will do as good/better job than Honda itself - Engine oil certainly DIDNT need to be changed every 3000 miles (Service Intervals of 10-12.5k dependant on model year)- regular checking and topping up is always advised as they can use oil, particularly when using VTEC alot. The fact is that the car has a Camchain too so should never require a change unlike the VRS's cambelt change ever 4 years! Outside of VTEC the car is quite docile and gives a respectable 30-32mpg.

We sold ours as we needed to reign in costs and had a nipper on the way. We needed easier access to the rear seats (5 door) and the running costs are significantly lower in the VRS. Its also much smoother on longer journeys (The Type-R @80mph was running 4.5-5k revs iirc) which used to be quite tiring!

Drive both and consider your needs. Only then can you make the right decision. Good luck:thumbup:

Neither !

Mazda MPS 3 kicks a Civic's bum all day long ! check one out theres a few left brand new and you can get a great deal on them at the minute.

except they don't,they are dull, may as well not have the atb diff as its set up so it don't cut in as a true slippy diff should and over a rough surface is nearly dangerouse on the limit,oh and heavy, good for fast sweepers but would get killed on a decent normal b road by the ctr,i was so underwhelmed by the mps it should have been so much more than it turned out, hell a re mapped k1 cupra leon was way more fun,way cheaper and way faster, the new 3 will hopefully be better it needs to be.breadvan ep3 ctr all the way, they are starting at 4 grand now proper bargain for a proper drivers car.

well i have had my type r since yesterday and i like it man the noise between 7.5 k and 8k is brilliant and to be honest it feels a lot better built than the fabia but obviously only time will tell

That's interesting  but I was thinking more along the lines of cars in the 2 to 3 years old bracket, which I guess would be a newer shape CTR? Might be just the good side of £2k, but £3k is perhaps still a little ott on my part,

Well I'm going to test drive all three (both new and old civics). People say that Hondas last forever etc. but I wonder how much life an old type civic would have (if its 6+ years old).

Anyway, will report back with my findings. I hope I fall in love with the vrs as it would help me out a lot financially.

My Dads had the EP3 and the new one. Service bills and parts are alot more expensive than the VAG parts. Yea that camchain is much better than the belts.

I had this chat with a fella at Demon Tweeks today, he said the oil should be changed between 4k to 6k, it does drink it like a fish drinks water, and that oil isnt cheap too.

Yea CTR is quicker and a better drivers car, but its what the want the car for, which should make the decision.

BTW the new Type R's interior is top notch.

vRS has my vote though.

One of my neighboours has a type R , He is always complaining about the cost to run it, mainly insurance & fuel costs.

Unfortunately he has been trying to sell it but just cant sell because of this.

Buy what you want, and enjoy.

Colleague has just got an '09 type R. She loves it and loves the speed. I think in a month or two I will ask her who she's getting on with it, but bearing in mind she used to have an R1 bike, I don't think she'll get bored of the speed, but maybe the economics of it. Apparently only £100 extra to insure though over her previous sport trim civic of the same shape....

I think Joel sums it up well

Performance = CTR

Saving cash = vRS.

I had an Accord Type R (209bhp, LSD) and now have a vRS (remapped, Peloquin diff, 312mm brakes, Whiteline RARB, Milltek decat etc).

I liked the Type R handling, the VTEC sound and the general feel of the car. I didn't like 30mpg.

The vRS is NOT a better car other than the mpg.

If you want economy, torque or a few sleeper thrills, pick the vRS.

If you prefer handling, sound, raw experience, go for the Type R.

I do a lot of motorway miles, so the combination of a 190bhp remapped diesel + cruise control is better (for me) than a Type R buzzing at 4000 revs at 75-80mph (and 30mpg).

Hope this helps........

I'm actually in the process of looking for a new car. My parent's have an 05 CTR, one of the last of the good ones registered on an 06 plate. They're looking to downgrade slightly and they've offered a swap for the Furby vRS seeing as they don't really use the Type-R as it was intended to be driven. Shopping trips to Tesco do no justice..

So naturally, I took the CTR out for a thorough test drive over the weekend. And though I found the CTR to be better than the vRS on all aspects of performance, road hold, driving position and general quality as an all round car, it doesn't feel like it's raising the bar enough from what I already have. My Furby is stock bar a few subtle engine tweaks, but nothing has been modified in terms of handling, just P-Zero Nero's on every corner. Main let down with the Civic was VTEC. You wait for it to kick in and it feels like a let down when it does. Doesn't exactly throw you into the seat and this car barely has 25k on the clocks, so it's no tired motor! However, being a biker, the revvy nature and engine/exhaust note is intoxicating!

So it's either swap for the CTR, or sell up and move along to Mk4 Supra TT or perhaps more sensible, 200sx S14. Have my heart set on a turbo, rear-wheel drive!

Spoilt for choice.. :(

  • 2 weeks later...
Integra TypeR. All day long.

agreed, proper car! the civic is too soft, the ITR is the original and the best

ive just bought one

back on topic i think its pretty hard to compare a CTR to a fabia vrs, theyre totally different cars other than the fact theyre both hatchbacks thats about all they have in common!

ive had a fabia vrs and it was a nice car to drive, i would say in standard form theyre not a quick car but the in gear performance is adequate and the economy is superb as you would expect.

ive driven a CTR and was dissapointed BUT it is a quicker car than the fabia, it has better brakes and a much better chassis to start with and once rolling the lack of torque is irrelivant as theyre quick in the vtec and can hold gears for a much longer period of time etc

my integra only makes 131 lb/ft or torque but it only wieghs 1100kg and is lethally quick in the twisties, i expected it to be usless but it isnt you just need to use the gearbox more to make it go and it does shift once in the vtec, it surprised me and ive had quite a few 300bhp 300lb/ft of torque turbo cars over the years.

BTW im not slating fabia's....ive had one and id have another one day!
