Techy People, Please help re: AOL

Featured Replies

Ok, I know I should get rid of AOL altogether, but Im stuck in a contract with them, and I didn't want the hassle of swapping all my email accounts etc :o

Anyway, hopefully one of you techy types might know something regarding my current problem, which is...

My laptop is overheating every time I have AOL on.

The fans are constantly on, until I sign out

I have checked the processes using Task Manager, and it is Waol.exe that is using all the CPU %

Why is this happening, and how can I stop it, as it is making internet use impossible.

Please help (I have emailed AOL Help, as their live help is offline atm )

TIA

Damian

It's happening because it's sh1te. Are you able to browse the internet without that software running?

You need to move to a proper ISP, seriously.

Speak to AOL about using their service with a router (it can be done they just play a bit and then turn the option on) Then get a router and connect with it.

Once you've got the router working on a wired connection take every trace of the sh*tty AOL software and remove it as it's an effing resource waste.

If memory serves, you can right click the AOL icon in the system tray and click on something like the fast disable option that should prevent this piece of sh**e software from starting up.

The other option is to create a new internet connection with your AOL username and password then use that new connection to logon to the internet.

Basically AOL is the pits, and that waol.exe essentially works as malware, recording all your key strokes and what sites you visit so that AOL can target with with it's sh**ty adverts.

Not to mention that it's actually a private network with a gateway, rather than a true ISP.

They know everything you're doing.

Everything.

I can use IE without logging onto AOL, is that you mean?

I am using a wireless router but have the yellow cable in (ethernet?) anyway, as my wireless liked to cut me off randomly.

My contract with AOL actually ran out last month so Im free to shop around, is that what I should do then, ditch AOL?

If so, who do I go to?

Sorry for all the questions, Im a bit of a dumb a$$ with stuff like this

Thanks for all the replies guys

Damian

You can definitely use a separate browser and disable waol.exe.

It depends on how much you want to spend.. if you happen to be a customer of O2 you'd be mad not to take their broadband at less than £10/month for up to 20mb.

If I open task manger and go to close down waol.exe it says are you sure you want to close this, it could lead to an unstable system blah blah.

Should I try it anyway?

Dont say yes, and then sit back and laugh when my Laptop kicks the bucket :P

Me and the missus have o2 contracts with our iphones.

Might have a word with them then, although Im not too fussed about having superfast broadband

Yes! Get rid. The problem is it'll be running next time you start up, so you need to either disable it or be happy to kill it manually every time you start up.

BTW Windows says that about a lot of things. You want to try being stood at the console of a server that's running an entire Accident and Emergency department when confronted with that message ;)

It's not just the speed, for the money it can't be beaten

If it's over a phone line I doubt it will be Superfast anyway.

Do you live in a cable area ??

I turned off waol.exe

It kicked me off Briskoda as AOL shut down, then restarted AOL

My fans spinning like a motherfecker though

I guess for now, I am better using IE until I sort out a new ISP

I am just so used to AOL and my emails, favourites etc.

Its a bit daunting for me doing this as I have been with AOL for many years

You'll soon get use too it :thumbup:

Can you not get Virgin Media matey?

Im using there service, and cant say anything bad about it really.

The cheap 2mb package has been upgraded to 10mb which is quite decent imo.

As for o2 ben, are there any bandwidth caps or restrictions of use?

Nope no restrictions or traffic shaping, unlike Virgin Media.

I didn't think Virgin Media trafficed the bandwidth, i dont tend to have a problem downloading at 1180kb/s with a 20mbps connection.

Thats half speed (1180kb/s)isn't it or am I mad

Maybe im on 10mb then , im not entirely sure now. Going to have to do a speed test when i get home now.:o

I thought we'd been upgraded to 20mbs recently, but im not sure now....i thought 1.18mbs was good for the service were on.

FWIW BE provide the backbone for O2's ISP service and if you're on their network you can get up to 24Mbit/s.

Friends that are about 5km from the exchange were still getting >10Mbits

I can recommend o2

I am on the Pro package ( £17 ) , but for £7 less a month you can get most of the same benefits.

I came from Orange , and it was sooo nice to be back with a real ISP again.

Great customer service and flawless connection for me so far.

I also got £50 cash back and 3 months free. ( so first year real cost is only £40 on the Premium up to 24mb package )

I am 2850m line length from my exchange but get a stable 10.5Mb.

Highly recommended if your exchange is unbundled.

AOL , man you crazy fool.
