Spraying new grill

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My task for the weekend is to spray my new Milotech grill, at present its fresh out the box so totally bare, I believe you can buy a Skoda Black Magic rattle can at Halfrauds, anyone ever used this? Also do I need to give it a coat with a black primer first and finish with a lacquer of some sort?

I'm totally clueless so any pointers will be much appreciated!

Thanks all, John

VW diamond black is a very close match;)

Perperation is the key...sanding, priming, paint and clear laquer.

I used Halfords Skoda Black Magic for my MFD3 surround and colour-coded grille, and it is a very good match.

Haven't laquered either at the moment, so I'll have to see how resilient the paint on the grille is to chipping etc

That is a top job bud! So I dont make the initial same mistake what primer did you use when it all went wrong? and secondly if the clearcoat finish didnt work what did you end up using to give it the gloss finish?

Thanks, John

Thanks

I bought a grey plastic primer from Wilkinson's (not their own brand, I hasten to add, I'm not that tight). It looked like it would do the job, but obviously failed miserably.

I then looked deeper into previous threads and found that someone on here recommended using etching primer, which is £11.99 a can from Halfords. Warning - it takes a fair bit of elbow grease on the chrome trim to roughen up the surface - just make sure you don't use too coarse a grain of paper otherwise it might scratch too deeply.

I haven't used anything on top of the paint at the moment, that's the natural finish of the paint. When I tried using clear laquer on the interior trim it made the surface go cloudy, losing all the metallic effect.

Hope that helps.

Geordie if you fancy being a bit "out there" i have 90% of a tin of VRS brake calliper green Hammerite left!

Woh! outrageous, I saw some pics of someones green wheels! It wasnt a good look at all so I'm gonna have to pass.

This is the grill I have UNIQUE TUNING, TOP CAR GRILL for SKODA FABIA on eBay, also Grilles, Meshes Vents, Exterior Styling, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-May-09 22:50:43 BST)

Its a milotech stylee badgless grill (half the price) - the finish on it at present is almost like plaster - fresh from the mould,

One small different thing I did think of doing was to put a small piece of red rubber piping round the bonnet pull section where I'm going to have to snip the mesh, should match my red engine bling nicely.

Since the grill is not plastic, do you still reckon that etching primer would be the one to go for - I suppose I can always start again if it goes wrong!

John

I have painted my grille and fog surrounds black. The fog surrounds were brand new with no paint. I sprayed them with Halfords primer, black magic paint and laquer. Same for the grille! Didn't have any problems with cloudyness thou?

i got cloudyness when I put the lacquer on my grille. turned out it was too cold and wet when I sprayed it outside which traps the moisture. fixed by more blue then lacquer applied indoors
