Front suspension spring snapped :(

Featured Replies

On our way out for the day when bang! Ypu the flipping nearside spring has decided to snap  I am annoyed as I need to drive back to camp tonight. I have recovery but I do not know any garages which I can trust down there. How much am I going to be looking at to repair? Will I have to/does it make sense to do both sides? I need this like I need a hole in the head at the 'mo due to buying our first hous and baby on the way.

Cheers

Have a look it maybe ok to drive, mine was ok for an emergency drive but it did effect tyre wear.

It clunks like buggery when driving :( I am happy to drive it to a garage not 110miles.

Where are you asw some of us might know a decent garage that way.

Be careful when you get the springs replaced. I had the nearside front spring snap on my mk1 vRS and had the local garage replace the front springs. I was assured that they were replaced with direct replacements. However, after a while it was apparent that something was wrong. The car looked like it was taking off, being much higher at the front. I believe that there are others on this site that have had similar issues. I guess that they just replaced with springs for a 1.8T rather than a vRS. Handling was 'interesting'. Well worth you double checking with whoever does the work for you that they are absolutely definately vRS specific springs they're putting on. I left it too late to complain as I thought that maybe the springs were settling in. In the end I used it as an excuse to upgrade to H&R springs all round on the car ;).

The other spring might be dodgy too, so worth replacing the pair. The cost of springs is relatively low compared to the labour pain of swapping them.

Always replace springs in pairs i.e both fronts or both rears.

I am wondering what to do whether to go oem or go for some lowering ones?? Will see how much oem is first.

Well rang first garage and they said they can get me the spring £56+ VAT, I am not 100% convinced after reading about folk getting 4x4 suspension instead of one for a vrs from garages.

Excuse my ignorance, but why 4x4 springs on a vRS? If vRS springs are £56 each, surely it's almost as cheap to get H&Rs?

If i were you i would get the original springs. You mave have issues with the dampening with uprated springs as i did ( I needed new/uprated dampers too after fitting stiffer springs). Ring the dealer up again and ask what part number the springs are, that way you know your getting the correct spring.

What seems to happen is that garages (including some Skoda dealers) don't order the correct OEM springs for a vRS.

I recently changed my farb bushes for Superpro ones. While doing so cleaned my springs to see the colour code spots (1 Violet + 4 Yellow spots).

Using EKTA, the part number for my springs are:- 1J0 411 105 AJ (coil spring for sports-type running gear)

NB: There is another one listed for sports running gear 6N0 411 105 C (1 Green + 5 White spots). Both numbers are for sedans.

Hope this helps

I ordered oem to save hassle in the end :) I checked with the parts lass and she asked me to confirm if they had 1 pink + 4 yellow spots. So Thrusday I will be roadworthy again :) I am shocked that the bloody thing snapped though. Ho hum joys of motoring and all that lol.

Good move, as Martin said about then having to change shocks, at least you know that its performance is matched to your shocks.

Glad your sorted

I think you have made a sound choice by sticking with the OEM springs. No doubt this comment will annoy some but I would definitely not lower the vRS any further than stock.

I was driving around the highland roads last week in my stock vRS with a reasonable load in the car (four people and a bit of light luggage). Despite taking it relatively easy (concession to passengers) I managed to ground the front of the car about 6 times in all and removed a lot of paint from the bottom of the bumper.

Maybe if you only ever plan motorway miles lowering makes sense, but if you enjoy the odd B road blast I can't see that lowering it any further than stock makes sense.

Just my experience.

Mine snapped about 3 months ago, it made up my mind to upgrade-Weitec GT coilovers-job done ;)
