Chipping and emissions

Featured Replies

Has anyone had their car emissions tested after getting it chipped? Any danger of a chipped vRS failing an MOT because of the increased emissions?

I may be wrong but I don't think the vRS has been out for 3 years yet - so no-one has required an MOT.

Thats right Dave, I have one of the first ones in the UK and its just coming up to 2 yrs old so still has 12 mnths to go.

Drawing a parallel with Subarus, remaps/rechips normally pass without a problem on emissions. It is only when you de-cat the exhaust that it gets marginal unless you get creative at MOT time.

I'm certainly not worrying.

I thought not having a cat on a post '92 car was instant failure anyway ?

Seems like too much hassle swapping the cat on and off just to get it thru the dreaded MOT

Agreed, but the question was about chipping ?

On the Subarus, apart from the Sports Cat and swap-for-std-downpipe-just-before-mot options, don't some people make sure the exhaust is really hot just before the test is taken ?

True, but I believe that the Police can demand an emissions test at any time.

I have mine with a chip and free-flow cats and downpipe :D. I also have a friend who is an MOT tester who does work on my car.

We gave mine an emissions test one day. It failed :( He then told me to turn off the climate control et voila, it passed :D

There you go, if you do get a roadside test, just turn off climate control and you will deffo pass.

Monkey hanger, From my Scoob experience I think you are correct allbeit post 95. I had an Imported 96 STI with full decat & managed to get that through with a non cat test as I convinced my local MOT station the date was 96.

If you hunt around on various boards you will find certain MOT stations can be persuaded to turn a blind eye to a non cat car. the usual procedure is to "stick the sensor up another cars exhaust" during the test.

Re Police roadside checks, yes they can do an emission test on demand, probably the best way to minimise the risk of that is to keep the car as Quiet as possible, Mega noise may equal pose but it dosent neccesarily equal a great performance increase.

Are the Police really likely to a) Pick on a nearly new car (possible I suppose) B) Do anything other than say " you'd better take it in the garage and make sure it complies within x days" - and if they do, revert to original settings.

Sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of a remap / rechip WitchF ?

I suppose that Licence protection s your best argument with yourself for not doing it ? ;)

Licence protection is the only arguement, other than cost. As I said above, unless you go to extremes you'll be OK. The only thing I haven't done is to remove the centre cat completely (downpipe one is gone :D ), so if I can pass like that, you can with a simple re-map.

Desperately. Just found out I'm going to be a dad in about 8 months time, so I've got to be responsible now ;)

:flowers: to Missus Witchfinder and  to you!

This going to be the first one?

AFAIK, cats have to be fitted to new cars that are sold, but

there's nothing illegal about taking it off once you've bought it.

It still has to meet emission controls though...

Thanks. Yes, this will be the first (and the last if I have anything to do with it!) Frankly, I'm terrified.

Congats Rob :)

Just think - now you've got an excuse to get a bigger car (that monster Superb)... :D

oh wait... it doesn't work like that? Drat....

BTW - is there any significance in you announcing this in the "my performance" forum?

Au contraire Stimps :p - my reason for buying the RS (and my wifes new Ibiza) was exactly due to the fact that she is due to sprog in July - she decided the cars we had before were not modern or safe enough for a kid so I got my fun (and big & safe etc) motor :D

Congrats Rob and don't worry im still getting more & more scared the closer the big day gets

Oh god! Don't let my girlfriend read this thread, please! She'll be bribing me with offers of a nice big vRS! :D
