Suspension Upgrade

Featured Replies

I am due to get another Furby quite soon (a blue one:thumbup:) And it will need it's suspension upgraded. Having had FSD's and Enbachs with very little trouble on my current car, that would be the obvious choice. However, at £750-£800 fitted you're well into KW or Bilstein Coilover territory, both of which have lifetime guarantees. I'll be keeping the car at least 3 years/60-70,000 miles. So the question is springs and shocks for fit and forget or coilovers for adjustability and warranty. Budget is about £1100 fitted maximum.

The thing that worries me about coilovers is the maintenance aspect - I think they need to be lubricated every 6 months or so or the adjustment mechanism can die. The springs and shocks option is basically maintenance free and with the mileages I'll be doing I don't really need any additional maintenance.

Apart from the ability to alter the ride height of the car, is there any other advantage to the coilovers? I don't really want to drop the ride height any more than 30-35mm as after that the ride comfort gets a bit silly for long distance running. I could get Bilstein springs and shocks that have a lifetime warranty too.

Weitec coilovers have plastic adjusting collars so they won't corrode to the shock body. That's on the GT's, don't know if the higher spec Weitecs use the same collars.

I've sent an e-mail off to some people who can set up the Bilstein system as it seems the good ones need a lot of playing with to get them right eg. KW V3, Bilstein PSS9's.

I think there is a lot to be said for keeping it simple with the Eibach/FSD option. No, you don't get wheel-arch cleaning drops, but that's not really what I'm after and I know the Eibach/FSD setup is a good one for me.

The way I see it is the likes of KW v1 Bilstein b14's you get a better matched spring\damper combo than conventional springs dampers. v3's, club sport, PSS9's are for the more extreme. To me its not about ride height.
