VED refund help

Featured Replies

Two months ago I wrote off a car on which I had just renewed VED for 6 months. I filled in the relevant form and sent it off with the disc for a refund (6 weeks ago!) but today got a letter saying the refund of VED was rejected.

It says because I am not the registered keeper or the previous registered keeper OR I am shown as the current keeper but have not told them its been sold/scrapped/sorn/stolen.

They have not returned the tax disc.

I have no V5 as the insurance company wanted that for the claim.

Stumped at what to do now.

You should have notified the DVLA yourself that the car had been scrapped by sending off the apropriate part of the V5 and sending the rest to the insurance company.

There is little you can do until your insurance company officially scrap the vehicle, as the DVLA will not refund the tax on a vehicle that is still technically able to drive on the road, even though it never will be.

Baisicly Mannyo is right, but as soon as you get conformation from the Insurance company it is written off the car and every thing on it (alloys towbar, tax, etc) then belong to the insurance.

The only way you could have done it was as soon as you had the accedent and before you send the V5 apply for the refund.

Have you had a offer for the car ? if not when the make a offer tell them to go and stick it and make a propper offer, then when you have done this three or four times and they are offering something decent then say oh by the way there was 6 months tax please add that onto the payment.

If they have made a offer just phone them and again tell them it had 6 months tax, and add that to the payment.

Definatly contact the insurance company
