What does that bit do?... Thread

Featured Replies

Had my car now over 3 months and have a couple of questions regarding bits and pieces.

1) In front of the aeriel is a small round disc with holes in... what does that do

2) When I go to my car I hear the fans turning ? Are they solar powered?

1) It's the GPS antenna for the sat nav

2) Does it have a sun roof? I know some VAG cars have a solar sun roof which powers the fans when the car is parked up to keep it cool, I've not heard of it in a Superb but it could be that.

If it's an Elegance with a sunroof it will be just that.

1 - it's the transponder (or whatever it's called) for the SatNav

2 - I take it you mean the ventilation fans? Is your car fitted with a sunroof? One of the options for sunroofs was a solar sunroof (looks like a bit like a glass roof from outside, but solid from inside) which contains solar power technology to drive the fan and move some air around the car when it's parked in the sun. Of course, if you don't have a sunroof, or it's glass or painted steel, then that's not the answer.

cheers

And the Edition 100 and I suspect the L&K.

I've still to find out what the thing in my boot is. I guess it is related to the ICE but not sure. It's at the top of the boot to the right hand side. It looks like it came with the car as opposed to aftermarket.

The "thing" in the boot at the top right hand side is the TMC unit for the Sat Nav. There is a non-audiable radio broadcast that contains traffic information that allows the Sat Nat to make redirection recommendations. For this to work, the CD needs to be TMC enabled. My factory supplied one isn't but my Italian CD is encoded and on a recent trip to Italy should traffic queues on the motorways.

Always assumed it was something to do with the audio. My CD isn't TMC enabled either. Too mean to buy one that is :D

I thought the TMC was mounted in the dash near the radio/sat nav and the box in the boot was the DSP .

easy way to tell is TMC has a couple of coax and a small multicore connector ,dsp has a 23 pin and 24 pin multicable connector ( part number of dsp is 1Z0035456 or SK35 DSP)

OK, OK... enough acronyms already!

Maybe my brain's having a slow day - but what the hell do TMC and DSP stand for? :confused:

No idea what they stand for but I'm sure the TMC is for Sat Nav to enable you to divert around jams.

When I bought the car, I'm sure the chap that had it before said the thing in the boot was something for the audio. He did give more detail, though I'm not bothered about ICE so didn't take it in. Not sure if Elegance's have these (whatever they are!)

TMC = Traffic Message Channel

DSP = Digital Sound Processor
