Droning noise at rear after repair

Featured Replies

My car's recently been fixed up after it was knocked on the front wing while parked at the side of the road. The list of parts replaced are:

Front bumper cover

l/f wing

l/f door moulding

l/f guide joint

l/f wheel and tyre

l/f inn bumper brkt

l/f wheelhouse cover

l/f track cont arm

l/f shock absorber

l tie rod

The repairs all look good and it drives straighter than ever but from 40 upwards there is a low pitched droning noise which sounds like its coming from the rear drivers side. The noise is louded at around 70 and the pitch drops when the speed drops. It sounds like something rubbing but its a constant drone, not a rhythmical noise.

One wheel and tyre were replaced during the repair. I originally had two Toyo Proxes T1-Rs at the back, but the car repair place moved them to the front. They said that when they put the brand new (odd) tyre at the front the car would not drive straight (it never did!)

So at the rear I now have one brand new Continental on the new wheel and one Accelera (?) with a decent amount of tread on it

Is this noise due to the two different tyres?

Any suggestions before I call them up tomorrow.

Thanks

could be just the tyre

but could be a wheel bearing

Check if tyres have directional tread, and if so, make sure they haven't fitted one wheel with tread pattern the wrong way round. Tyre wall will have a direction of rotation arrow.

Agree with ric; if bumped hard and brake on the bearing might be damaged. Happened to me on old Corsa. Worth checking just jack up and spin wheel. Noise should be from slight rub on brake, anything else needs looking at. Both rear wheels too.
