Temp Gauge....AGAIN..

Featured Replies

Well this is really starting to annoy me.

Not so long ago i posted a problem regarding my temp gauge, and had some really helpful responses. The needle on the gauge would never quite reach halfway, and start to move up and down depending on how hard i was driving. I went about replacing the Temp Sensor, with the new 'Green' one, thanks to my local garage for a couple of quid. This started to cure the problem, however a couple of weeks later, the needle still doesn't reach halfway and is still moving up and down. I have a feeling this is affecting the turbo, as some days it doesn't feel as if it's boosting at all.. :(. What else do I need to look out for??

Any ideas anyone? as i'm in the market for a remap soon and don't want any lingering issues. :rotz:

Maybe the gauge is right?

In that case you could be looking at a partially stuck thermostat. If it is stuck half way it will cause the engine to run cool when driving gently (when it should be mainly closed) and hot when driving enthusiastically (when it should be mainly open).

Worth getting that looked at reasonably promptly as we seem to be having some pretty decent weather right now and you don't want it cooking the head.

Annoyingly quite hard to test for. Two standard tests are:

1. When the stat fails fully closed you can always test the inlet and outlet hoses of the stat housing (one will be hot and one cold).

2. When fully open you can start up the car from cold and the inlet and outlet hoses will warm up at the same rate.

In the stat fails partially closed it is harder to be sure what is happening but you might be able to get some idea from test 2 above.

Hope that helps,

Could also be an issue with the water pump. The stat is cheaper to replace first... if you get no joy then move on to the water pump.

Thirded. As far as testing the stat? Don't bother. Fit a new one.

How tough is it to change the stat on the vRS engine? It was a horrible job on my old VR6 as the stat housing was buried beneath a mass of other plumbing and wiring and the bolts were virtually inaccessible.

If it's easy to get to on the vRS then definitely just change it.

Thats the right type of stat. Problem is, if you do your water pump you'll need to do your cambelt, as it's driven of the belt.

Some thermostats are more expensive, such as some of the Octavia 1.6 ones, but is probably down to then only coming with the housing as they are sometimes glued inside.
