Biggin Hill 2009 (image heavy).

Featured Replies

A few from the Biggin Hill airshow today.

My first airshow with a DSLR. I really struggled with the changing light when the sun moved around. It started to get quite hazy as well, just as the Red Arrows came out:mad:

Pleased with most of the images I did get and I'm looking forward to another one, hopefully without that killer heat. Man it was hot:eek:

Awesome pictures

Haven't decided whether I'm going in yet, or just sitting with my bike at the side of the A15 (tight-wad style). As I only live a mile away, it's not a problem

High:D

Sorry I'm no good at gauging height in the sky. If I had to guess I would say prop & bi planes were getting down to a few hundred feet on a low pass, Planes like the Euro Fighter looked like they were going to 3-4 thousand feet at times.

Cool pics...

I've heard the Eurofighter is a 'little' on the loud side! :D

What was your apparatus and settings ?

Seems to be a fair bit of "Depth-of-field" and high resolution on all the shots.

I use a Nikon D300 with a 70-200mm VR f2.8 lens. Really I could have done with at least 300mm or more (maybe one day;))

Camera was set to Shutter Priority. I used a shutter speed of 1/1000+ for jets and 1/200-350 for the prop aircraft. The slower speeds will give "prop blur" which give the affect of a turning prop rather than just freezing the blades.

Not an easy tactic to master (I'm still miles off:D) Slowing the shutter speed gave a nice effect with the propellers but also gave me some blured pictures. I found 1/350 about as low as I could go. This gave me a passable compromise between blured props and a half decent sharp image. I need a lot more practice.

Nice pics Chris. Any more of the Vulcan? :)

Great pics - I was planning to go myself but found myself in bed all-day after being passed a tummy bug by my two youngsters.

Anybody going to Flying Legends at Duxford 11 / 12 July?

Thanks,

I'm aiming for a Duxford show at some point. Flying Legends should be really good.

Show us your pics if you do make it.

Excellent pictures, Ian I see that 10 Downing Street just responded to the Vulcan petition with a big fat freddie :(
