Wheel bearing damage?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sometime ago I had lost one of the centre caps for my alloy wheels. So the car didn't look a mess, with a missing cap, I removed the others and put some wheel nut caps on instead (not on in pic).

This, however, exposed the ends of the wheel hub/ nut. A friend suggested that this could cause water to get into the bearings and wear them. Should some grease around the hub/ nut prevent this?

Please ignore the tape measure :P.

Thanks,

Jim

I'd get another center cap asap tbh. Can't be that expensive surely?

I personally would be more concerned in what looks like a crack in the wheel just to the left of the top of your tape measure.

They don't make the centre cap anymore :( - after consulting 3 or 4 dealers no luck at all including the 'bay'. That 'crack' is more likely dirt lol but will check it out anyway - thanks for spotting.

What was the verdict then Jimbo?

Is that the nut on the end of the drive shaft?? I really wouldn't worry. People who have wheel trims don't have an issue and they don't do much to protect the hub nuts.

Yeah - its the nut on the end of the drive shaft.

@Mr Ree: It was in deed some dirt (thank goodness :D).

As a precaution I cleaned all the surface rust with steel wool and used a lithium based grease around the hub nut.
