Second cam belt change at 140,000

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Dec 2000 X reg Fabia 1.9 TDi Elegance.

My car is approaching 140,000 and according to the schedule, it should has its second toothed belt replacement at the next service, which is due.

I've been quoted a vaule of £800 part-ex. Tooted belt change had been quoted to me at £450. Also needs rear disks and pads (£160) and has intermittent aircon issue ( £££'s).

Still on original exhaust and clutch!

MOT due in Dec.

I love this car and it runs great but realistically, how long shoud I expect it to last? The work to get it A1 is more than its worth.

What to do? Part Ex now or spend some money? Brakes defo need doing before Dec and prob exhaust too.

I'll be sad to see it go but that's life I guess...

Cheers all

£450 is a little steep. Why not source the parts yourself (£150ish for whole cambelt service items I reckon) and get a regular garage to fit for say 4 hours labour? Will last ages as long as belt is changed soon. Not sure, but the schedule for cambelt changes is usually 60k/120k/180k or every 4 years so not sure how yours has reached 140k miles and still on only the 2nd cambelt?

Market value is meaningless when a car gets to that age. If it's reliable, and you like it, paying for the required maintenance is still a lot cheaper than buying a newer car. Diesels engines can go for 300,000+ miles and still be going strong.

Even if it needed 2K worth of work, could you get a better car for that money?

Trick is to find a cheaper garage that you trust (they are out there).
